Despite the best intentions, various codes of ethics, and extensive public attentin, journalists are repeatedly seen to behave in ways that are less than ethical. With refreshing candor and scholarly rigor, Ian Richards, journalist and academic, examines the reasons why this particular profession is, apparently, so ethically challenged.The book argues that, although public concern invariably focuses on the ethical behavior of individual journalists and editors, such factors as personal depravity play only a minor part. A range of other forces are identified, such as growing corporatism and rapid technological change, which influence and set the context for ethical standards and norms.
