Book Reviews of Pumping NylonBook Review: Many Things Improve With Age Summary: 5 Stars
As stated by previous Reviewers, Pumping Nylon seems to be focused on increasing muscle control, tendon flexing and stamina. Mr. Tennant has consolidated the works of Abel Carlevaro into a more delightful, logical and efficient manner of developing one's technique. Segovia described Carlevaro as "one of his best students." The Carlevaro works to wish I refer are the 1966 Serie Didactica Para Guitarra (Barry Publishing, Buenos Aires/Montevideo), published in four Cuadernos. No. 2 is for the right hand; Nos. 3 and 4 are for the left hand. Mr. Tennant has reduced these Carlevaro Cuadernos to a minimum number of pages without the loss of effectiveness. While Calveraro did wonders for the didactics of technique Tennant has taken the exercises to new levels of effectiveness. Pumping Nylon is highly recommended for what it was written - helping us all learn how to use our hands to make music come out of a wood box using stronger more flexible tools.
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
I am a self-taught, early intermediate player. Following the warm-up routine made me aware of a couple of weak points in my technique. Just becoming aware of the problems has gone a long way to correcting them. I look forward to spending more time working with the exercises. I am certain that anyone who puts in some diligent work with Pumping Nylon will become a better player. I was surprised at how quickly I improved by following Mr. Tennant's instructions. About his controversial advice on nail shaping: it's an individual thing so you have to do your own experimenting. Even if his ideas on nail shaping (a small section in the book) don't work for you, I'm certain that the rest of the book will help you improve. It is well worth the price. Be aware that this is not a method book and you do need to be able to read standard notation for this edition.
Book Review: Money well spent Summary: 5 Stars
It was a fantastic book.
This is a technique book and it establishes the basics quite well. My playing has only improved from this. I believe that a guitarist willl never be able to move past an intermediate level without applying the techniques and exercises outlined in this book.
I recommend the DVD version. It doesn't cost much more and helped elaborate. But you can still get benefit without the DVD.
Scott Tennant has some technique books and some repertoire books. Don't confuse them. It's amazing that there are bad reviews for books because the buyer wanted one and bought the other, having not read the titles properly. Now whose fault is that?
Book Review: Absolutely the best for the beginning Classic Guitarist Summary: 5 Stars
Don't bother with the "Sour Grapes" review from the so called professional guitarist above. This book is quickly becoming the De-Facto standard teaching guide for the classic guitar. In the last three years I have had three seperate teachers and they ALL used this book somewhere in their teachings. The included warmup routine is worth the price alone. The practice routines are carefully organized in a way that allows you to pick the areas you feel need the most improvement. Thanks Scott for a great book. Well done!
Book Review: Get pumping with Scott's book Summary: 5 Stars
This book is very useful for developing strength and control of both hands. It's focus is on goal directed practice of left hand and right hand excercises - so don't buy it if you're looking for a book of music - but DO buy if you want to improve your technique, and you're willing to put regular focussed practice into achieving results. The key to development here is discipline - ie. stick to the exercises in the book and do them regularly - I know this can be a challenge at times, but the rewards are worth it.
