Book Review: Handy, but not essential
Summary: 4 Stars
After going through this collection of pieces, I found that I was able to develop a sense of which pieces I needed to practice as the same old faults cropped up. A little like fixing my golf swing - old bad habits tend to creep back in. In any event, it is good to have a set of pieces with an accompanying CD, to check phrasing, timing and general hygiene factors. The downside is that none of the pieces are awfully inspiring, and I view playing them as more of a chore than anything else. Get through these, and then its back to Bach..
It also does not seem necessary to have tied this book to the original "Pumping Nylon" instruction book (which I cannot recommend highly enough). While I understand that the publishers may have wanted to capitalize on the success of the brand generated by that effort, the marketing strategy has detracted from the fact that the books are in no way related, and that this is functions quite well on its own terms.
I also recommend Andrew York's jazz book for classical players, from the same publisher.
Summary of Pumping Nylon: Intermediate to Advanced Repertoire
The pieces in this book are selected and designed around the various techniques addressed in the best-selling book Pumping Nylon. They are offered as an extension of the excercises presented in that book, and to provideconcert pieces in which to apply the various techniques discussed. The emphasis here is technique-building repertoire appropriate for study and concert performance. New compositions included are by Adam del Monte, Joe Diorio, Brian Head and Carlos Rivera. Also included is the cadenza from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. The CD is beautifully played by Scott Tennant and Adam del Monte.Instruments & Performers Books
