Book Review: Building dread and thrilling action

Book 5 of the Codex Alera shows the author really hitting his stride in terms of the plot coming together and joining the action of the novel.
This time, Tavi takes his band of warriors across the sea to help return the Canim to their homes and face the Vord threat. The Vord, of course, are more of a threat in the Canim county than expected, and they have also (unbeknownst to Tavi) reemerged in Alera, in the ruined countryside where Kalara used to be.
Author Jim Butcher continues his familiar breakdown of characters into different groups continues to advance different subplots that weave together at the end, but the cliffhanger nature of this novel results in the resolution of subplots, but the overall effect not accomplishing the intended goals.
There is good advancement of the story, both forward and, to my surprise, further advancement of the backstory. It would have been easy and perfectly acceptable to let the backstory remain as it was, but Butcher provides a few insights that add great depth to certain characters.
I was surprised at one of the major plot elements, and do not wish to spoil anything, but I will say that a significant event happens, and I was somewhat unsatisfied, because it is so sudden, and the reader observes it only from afar, without allowing us to truly experience what would ordinarily be a major scene in a story.
In the end, there are some surprises, some victory, some loss, and a whole lot of fun.
