Book Reviews of Pretear, Vol. 1Book Review: Magical Girl Snow White. Summary: 4 Stars
"The Princess of disaster will consume the leafe and everything will die. But it won't stop there. Warmth, light, sound, the movement of the air... it will all be consumed. The world will become empty. Will you join us and fight against the Princess of disaster ... as the Pretear... to save the world?"
Himeno Awayuki is a high school student adjusting to a new life. Her novelist father has remarried a woman who runs a cosmetic company. This new life transports Himeno from one room apartments to a life a luxury, with servants, posh mansions, and all the responsibility that goes with it. She also has two new stepsisters, Mayune who is in the tenth grade, and Mawata, who is in the eighth grade. Mayune can't stand the fact that Himeno and her father have been introduced into her life, and she is constantly taking out her aggressions on Himeno. On the way to school one morning Himeno encounters a little boy who stepped on a flower and wants to revive it. He asks to hold Himeno's hand, and when she acquiesces there is a burst of light and the flower grows. She passes out. Suddenly, she finds herself in a bed with a very handsome man standing over her and a posse of 6 others in tow, including the young boy. Confused, she gets along to school and later to her home, only to find the seven men there waiting for her.
The men are there for a reason, they need Himeno's help. As mentioned before, there is an evil Princess out to destroy the world, and she plans on doing this by sucking all of the life force, or in this case leafe, from all that exists. The only hope lies in a young woman becoming the Pretear, one who binds with each of the 7 men in order to heal the natural forces of the world. Shin is the young boy Himeno first met with, and he controls the leafe of the plants. Hajime controls the water, Kei controls the light. A man named Go controls heat, and Mannen, in turn, controls the cold. Sasame controls sound, and the final leafe knight, Hayate, controls the wind. Everyone is keen on Himeno becoming the Pretear save Hayate, who has unresolved issues with the last Pretear evidently. But Himeno decides to ignore him and become the hope of the world.
The series follows a typical "magic girl" storyline, even right down to the outfit changes whenever she is about to execute her powers as the Pretear. All of the men readily accept her as the savior except for the one who is obviously supposed to be the love interest. There are obstacles in the form of her sisters and stepmother, more like the sisters and stepmother from the Cinderella story than Snow White, but who's counting? I'm still waiting to see how all of the Snow White elements will evolve. It's an interesting idea for a magic girl story, but does not have many very original elements to it. The illustrations aren't the greatest either. The artist is clearly not a hack, but there's a lot more that could have been done to improve the quality. However, I wouldn't rule this out entirely as something unworthy of being read, and I think that many people probably would find it entertaining. I'm waiting to see how it goes before I render final judgment on it, and I'll even go so far as to rent the anime to see if it is one of those series that translates better to screen or not. I think fans of "Sailor Moon" or "Magic Knights Rayearth" would love this.
Summary of Pretear, Vol. 1Himeno is a high school freshman who's having trouble adjusting to the lifestyle of the very rich. Her father Kaoru is a one-time famous author of young girls' novels. One of his greatest fans was Natsue, a wealthy woman who liked Kaoru so much that she snatched him up from the rundown apartment and married him! But Himeno's life is far from rosy. Her dad tends to take the side of Natsue rather than her, and Natsue's two daughters from a previous marriage aren't very fond of their new stepsister. One day, Himeno takes a shortcut to school and meets a young boy. When she takes the boy's hand, she's transported to a fantasy world that lies on the brink of extinction. And the one person that can stop it is the girl called "Pretear."
