Book Reviews of Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb TensesBook Review: Clearly written explanation with concise examples. Summary: 5 Stars
The explanations given in this book are the clearest I have found for the use of the various tenses and verbs. For example, the author provides five pages of material describing the proper uses of 'ser' and 'estar.' She clearly details how each should be used. The exercises are very appliable and to the point. The book is wonerfully lacking in linguistic jargon. Any linguistic terms used are explained clearly with appropriate examples. The format is very easy to follow, and the book is logically organized. This book is exactly what it claims to be. It provides further practice for someone with a basic grasp of Spanish. I am using it in conjunction with Barron's Mastering Spanish Level II audiocassette series and have found it to be a very useful asset. Answers to the exercises are given in an easy-to-read format in the back of the book.
Book Review: Piece of cake, Latino-style Summary: 5 Stars
Dorothy Devney Richmond has written a series of books to help us dullards learn to "habla el espanol," and they are real doozies. This one goes bam, bam, bam. It hits all those points that have been confusing you in your long struggle to master this beautiful tongue. It is clear. It is concise. She knows exactly what it is that is confusing us, and she straightens us out. Bless her heart. I hope she's getting rich. She deserves it. I live in Mexico, and last year I attended a language school for six months. It was not until I finally stumbled, muttering incoherently, from the school that I found Professor Richmond. Everything is finally falling into place, and it will for you, too. There are companion workbooks (yes, this is a series of workbooks): Another is on pronouns and prepositions. Great, well-focused instruction.
Book Review: Highly reocmmended Summary: 5 Stars
I am in the process of teaching myself spanish, and this book is an invaluable help. I have been using it in conjunction with a Spanish/English dictionary and the 501 Spanish Verbs book, and I would highly recommend the same to anyone who asked. What I like about this book: 1. The lessons are presented in a logical (to me anyway :-p) order, and each new lesson builds on/re-enforces what you have previously learned. 2. You have ample opportunity to practice, practice, practice what you have learned. Each lesson has at least one practice section where you can practice reading and writing what you have learned. 3. The answers are included in the back of the book, so if you're not sure about something, just look it up! No wishing that you had the teachers edition! 4. The price can't be beat!
Book Review: Spanish Verb Tenses workbook is great! Summary: 5 Stars
This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.
Book Review: Excellent through and through. Summary: 5 Stars
I spent over six months in Spain. While I was there, I took Spanish classes with a native Spanish speaker, and THIS was a primary text.It is excellent. It is very well organized. It has wonderful exercises. I found its workbook format very useful (you can rip the answer sheets out of the back and put them into those plastic sheet protectors, copy the original exercises, and work them numerous times to really drill home the particulars). It wasn't heavy as a brick, so I could carry it around and work during odd moments. I found the translation exercises particularly well-thought out and worthwhile, especially with my Franklin DBE-1440 pocket spanish translator.... Don't even wait to buy it. And it's CHEAP enough that you can afford it TODAY!
