Book Reviews of Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses

Book Review: The Perfect Companion to the Famous "501 Spanish Verbs"!
Summary: 5 Stars

When English-speaking students encounter the verb system of the Romance Languages, they tend to become quite disoriented.

Dorothy Richmond has produced such a work with this hefty, yet economical volume. You get ample practice, heaps of examples and clear explanations, tense-by-tense. That organizing principle makes it the perfect book to have open on your desk and your general Spanish textbook, whatever it is.

This book is perfect for students who have just completed their first year of Spanish -- as a comprehensive review of the Spanish verb system. It could be useful for students during their first year, but I think only with the guidance of a teacher. There is simply a lot to absorb.

The next step for most students, after a comprehensive review, is to go into depth in the areas that typically present residual problems.

Sincerely,

Eric W. Vogt, Ph.D.

Book Review: Only One Course You Need to Speak Spanish
Summary: 5 Stars

Say it any way you like, verbs are the key to speaking any language, especially Spanish.
But as good as Practice Makes Perfect may be, it is not enough.
You must have verb practice, and in context.
Here are my best recommendations in order of importance:
1. Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour Audio CDs
This is the king of all Spanish courses and has wonderful verb templates, verbs in context, and verb practice. Most of the best written material is included in the CDs which you can listen to anywhere, even 'Behind the Wheel'.
2. 501 Spanish Verbs by Christopher Kendris
3. Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses. Next to Kendris' 501 Spanish Verbs, the best on the market.
Used together, these form a potent learning mix that is sure to get you speaking, understanding and communicating effectively in Spanish.

Book Review: You will learn your verbs, guaranteed
Summary: 5 Stars

All reviewers praise this book, and so will I. It is really very good: clearly structured into chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of Spanish verb tenses. Very easy-to-understand explanations throughout the book (the explanation of when to use "ser" and when "estar" is priceless!), lots of exercises that will test your comprehension of the covered material. I bought the book about 7 weeks before an important Spanish test I had to take as part of my job application. Although I did not have time to go through the whole book, I was still able to review the most important parts of the Spanish verb structures; and it really made a difference! (I learned Spanish 10 years ago but never used it since then.) If you look for either a review material or for a book that will teach you the tricky Spanish tenses, buy this one. It's more than worth the money.

Book Review: The perfect guide to accompany your Spanish studies
Summary: 5 Stars

I would recommend this book along with Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions for any level learner of Spanish, but I'd advise you to have a little bit previous knowledge. It's really cheap, explains every important concept in a very simple way and includes lots of exercises to practice. I've been using this book since the summer after I finished my first year of Elementary Spanish at college. I think it was very useful, especially in my second year of Spanish when I still didn't understand many grammar concepts but was given a text book written entirely in Spanish. This workbook explains things very clearly in English, which is important for beginners. Now that I am close to fluent in Spanish, I still use this book now and again to look up things I'm fuzzy on, and I definitely plan to use it to help me as a Teaching Assistant for students next year.

Book Review: Excellent...
Summary: 5 Stars

All I can say is that if your learning style tends to be analytical and/or visual (written on the page), get this book. You won't be sorry. It's organized very logically and offers great explanations of some things that tend to be fuzzy for English speakers. The best thing is that it provides tons of practice to really drill the concepts in... And let's face it, you are not going to learn or remember a language (written or spoken) without practice, no matter how many fad "immersion" CD's you have running in the background while you watch TV and eat popcorn. It's not a spectator sport. It takes work and practice--this book gives you a lot of that!

All of the Spanish Practice Makes Perfect books by Richmond are just as good as this one. Get them all and you'll be busy for months... doing the kind of "immersion" that really helps.
