Book Reviews of Practical Programming for Strength Training

Book Review: Better investment then gold!
Summary: 5 Stars

For two years I've been doing different routines and searching countless hours on the net for the "right" routine. I've spent hours trying to come up with my own. I've made progress, but wonder how much more I could have made if I would have just started with this. I was smart and bought starting strength months back (I then learned how to do the exercises)but didn't think I needed this. I was wrong. Now after two years of lifting I'm starting over. But now I no longer need to look for the next best routine, I already have it. The best part is I'm set for, probably, the rest of my life as far as my routine foundation goes. Now in a year or two if I change my mind I'll be sure to update this, but at this point it doesn't appear that I'm going too. Even if you don't agree completely with this book it does simplify a lot of seemingly complicated theories on strenght training. The strength chart at the back is worth the money by itself. Can't wait to start crushing those intermediate numbers!!!!

Book Review: Plan your strength training with this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this book less than a week at this time of writing: I've read it twice and it's destined to be a reread and look up constantly. Tells you all you need to know about weight training program design, from beginner to elite levels, including for bodybuilding but leaning towards weight training for sports. Although written by trainers for trainers, it will enable you to be your own trainer also.

Especially valuable is the advice about when to know when it's time to change your program as you progress, to avoid both stagnation and overtraining, explaining periodization clearly and helpfully. Don't know what periodization is? Read about it here and learn to incorporate it into your training.

This book is clearly presented and full of useful info. For info on actual exercise technique, refer to Rippetoe's other book, Starting Strength, which I also recommend heartily for anyone who wants authoritative no-nonsense instruction on getting it right in the gym.

Book Review: practical programming for strength training
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very solid book on strength development. I have been weight training for 25 years and wish i would have read this book in high school or had a trainer that knew this material. The book flows very well and gives you great background on what, why and how. Uses various examples and seems to have great sources and benchmarks over the last 30-40 years. Authors are very opinionated at times, but my take away is these two know what they are doing. If you are a high school or college kid, especially one playing football or power/weight lifting, i strongly recommend. If you are playing a skilled sport such as baseball it's a great reference but not primarily for you and the authors do a great job of explaining why. If you are most interested in bodybuilding (Hypertrophy) then again this is a very good reference, especially related to over-training, but the focus of the text is on strength and power.

Book Review: The most COMPLETE trainning book
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a chemistry/ biology student in my last year of college. I also have been trainning for the last several years in strength and conditioning. Having read countless books on trainning (most of them focus in the Bodybuilding Arena) I have come across this superior book. It has all of the correct principles and most accurate science data in place along with the experience of someone who not only coaches athletes but is also a lifter. This translates into a loose program that can really help your trainning and not only improve preformance but also (if you are trainning to get a better looking body) help improve looks as well. I would have only one caution the language is semi technical and a background in physiology (though not totally a must) is very helpful. All of the advice is backed with reasearch and will definitly help improve your trainning.

Book Review: As good as it gets!
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again Rippetoe has written a book that is the "pinnacle" of its particular subject. How many of us out there know all of the lifts....know the correct way to do them....but also know EXACTLY what lifts to do...how many lifts to do...and why? How many of us know how to help a weightlifter that is "stuck" and is no longer progressing....so that he/she can get unstuck and continue to see results? And finally, how many of us could prescribe a weight program to many different lifters that are all seeking entirely different goals? And provide that program with solid evidence as to why it works...not because you read it in a magazine or heard it at your local gym? The answer to all of these questions and many more is ALL OF US....after we read this book. It is that good...it is that thorough... and it is that correct. Enjoy and learn.
