For years I enjoyed this book as a child, and now my own children enjoy it too. Part of its charm is that it is uniquely and completely Australian. It speaks about things that Australians have grown up with and highlights them, reminding us of our identity.
As with all Mem Fox's literature, the language is beautiful and easy to read to young children. It has a lovely rhythm and little surprise bursts of poetry that add to the enjoyment of the narrative. The story is engaging with a gentle suspense throughout that comes to a very satisfying conclusion.
Julie Vivas' beautiful illustrations capture the uniqueness and colour of Australia and include some cultural observations that once again remind us of our identity.
An Australian classic and a truly beautiful children's picture book.
Summary of Possum Magic (Voyager Books)
Grandma Poss uses her best bush magic to make Hush invisible. But when Hush longs to be able to see herself again, the two possums must make their way across Australia to find the magic food that will make Hush visible once more. ?Another treat from Mem Fox that is sure to be treasured.
