Book Review: a comprehensive, engineering-centric tome of the 911

i have never been a fan of porsche's archaic vw beetle development. that the 911 remains to this day is 1) extremely baffling and ridiculous, 2) an example of how technically inferior designs can actually prevail thru marketing, and 3) a testament to porsche's engineering prowess and stubborness. paul frere's tome illustrates #3 by meticulously documenting the 911's development from the very beginning all the way to the launch of the 997 (in this edition). paul frere is a 911 enthusiast, and much of the information contained in this book were obtained directly from the people responsible for the 911 inside porsche at various points in time. for true 911 fanatics, there is absolutely nothing out there like this. in fact, i haven't see any book on any car this dense with technical and development history. paul frere's love for this car really shines through...in a very engineering-centric way. it's actually very fitting for this car. the information included here is very impressive, but it's not the most artfully organized. in fact, it's quite hard to read at times because it's so technical and detailed (dry). this is not your common-variety coffee table book on cars; it feels more like an SAE publication or a text book. and the updates over the years are not really integrated but tacked on after each other. indeed, it can feel quite disorganized at times, but it's merely form strictly following function. much like the 911. for those casually coveting the 911 and want a nice picture book with tables of car magazine-caliber specs, move on to something else, as this book may seem pretty dry to you. there're aren't that many color photos, and the photos are not at all comprehensive of all the street and track models over the years; this book really is for 911 nerds only. paul frere recently passed away, but his legacy as a great test and racing driver, auto journalist, and above all one of the nicest and gentle man in the car/racing world lives on. i may not be a fan of this backwards car, but i'm a fan of paul frere's book
