Pledged is a rare cross between a serious journalism work and a quick-paced story. Robbins follows four sorority women in college for a year, and visits other sororities to interview Greeks and to experience sorority activities. As a result, her story addresses episodes that the four girls deal with, like racism, date rape, interestingly placed piercings, peer pressure, and mind games and also events that occurred at other sororities, like branding, hazing, violence, and mean girls.
Yet I finished the book with the enlightened attitude that as a non Greek, I now would consider allowing my daughter to join a sorority, but she and I would have to resarch the possibilities in order to find her a healthy environment in which female friendships can heighten instead of stifle her college experience. Previously I would have dismissed sororities without a second thought.
