Book Review: A great photographic record of the SS United States

This book contains a great collection of finely-reproduced black and white photographs and historical summaries of American passenger liners dating back to the Leviathan. Over half of the 100-plus pages are devoted entirely to the SS United States and include many magnificent photos of the ship under construction and in service during the 1950's and 60's. The photos and stories of the other ships definitely enhance the interest and value of this book, providing context and some insight into the development of American liners and the lineage of the SS United States herself, the greatest of them all. For a minimal price, this is definitely a must-have book for the library of anyone interested in maritime history, ships or marine photography. It also makes a nice photo companion to other works on this subject, such as Frank Braynard's "The Big Ship: The Story of the SS United States."

More than 150 rare photographs reveal stages in the ship's construction and its christening, as well as intimate views of modern lounges with paneled walls and fireplaces, staterooms and dining rooms, a gymnasium and pool, theatres, a ballroom with cocktail bar, and play decks. Extensive captions provide data on tonnage, size, speed, and other characteristics.
