I own two user guides to Adobe Photoshop Elements 7; one is the book under review published by Wiley titled Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Digital Classroom, and the other is "the official training workbook from Adobe Systems" published by Adobe and titled Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Classroom in a Book. (Actually, the latter is part of a two-books-in-one book, the other book being a training guide to Adobe Premiere Elements 7. I bought the two-books-in-one book so I could have the Premiere training guide, because as of this date that book is not available in a standalone version, whereas Adobe's training guide to Photoshop Elements 7 is.)
Each training guide to Photoshop Elements 7, the one published by Wiley that is under review on this page and the one published by Adobe, includes a DVD with additional training materials, and each book is approximately 375 pages long. And in my opinion both are excellent training guides to the software. Both cover basics that many users may learn without consulting a book or any other form of help, and both cover intermediate and advanced techniques. Having said that, I find the Wiley book by the Aquent Creative Team a bit more user friendly. I've managed to do a lot of different things with computers for the two decades I've been using them, but I rarely feel all that confident about what I'm doing. It's nice to get some hand-holding when learning to do stuff on computer, and I feel I get that from the Wiley book whereas the book published by Adobe has a bit (just a bit; I don't want to exaggerate) of a Dragnet's Sgt. Friday "Just the facts, ma'am" quality to its lessons and prose. The writing strikes me as being just a tad on the dry side (and that may be just what someone wants, just as some prefer dry wines).
If you have Adobe's software suite that includes both Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7 and you feel a need to have a workbook or user guide that instructs you in how to use both software programs, then I would recommend getting Adobe's two-books-in-one training workbook. But if you only need or want a book that will help you use Photoshop Elements 7, then I recommend this one, the one published by Wiley and written by the Aquent team. It is well-written and amply illustrated, and I find the illustrations a bit less textbooky than the illustrations in the Adobe guide and more a bit more helpful (perhaps because I find them nicer to look at). The only con I can think of is that I had to use a very sharp Schrade Uncle Henry knife to open the DVD packet, but maybe someone with sharp, long-enough fingernails could do it without a problem.
Both this book (by the Aquent Creative Team) and the one published by Adobe have "look inside" features here at Amazon, so you can easily compare them before deciding which one you think might be most to your liking. I think both books are excellent, but for the reasons I mention above, if I was going to give one as a gift to someone such as my daughter, I'd give her this one.
I want to add that I find the 13 lessons on the DVD that accompanies this book helpful and an added bonus. The instructor (a male) has a pleasant speaking voice, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Watching the lessons is how I imagine taking an adult education class in how to use this software might be, the only difference being that you don't get to ask the DVD questions, but you can of course look things up in the book via the index and table of contents (and Adobe's website for Elements 7 is always there as well).
