Book Reviews of Peyton Place (Hardscrabble Books-Fiction of New England)Book Review: small town, big 5 Stars
Metalious' novel of a New England town is frank, compelling and spellbounding. The characters are very believable and the incidents of growing up, falling in love, incest and murder hit very close to life. When it hit America in 1956 it became an overnight sensation - the movie was not half as good. Sadly Metalious' fame brought her eventual alcoholic ruin after novels like "Return to Peyton Place" "The Tight White Collar" and her last work "No Adam in Eden". I bought them all but like so many authors Grace never equalled the impact of her first work. She died a premature death in the early '60's - very much an author before her time. Read "Peyton Place" it remains a timeless book.
Book Review: Scandal in a small town Summary: 5 Stars
Peyton Place is an excellent book that will have you sitting down and reading it nonstop for hours at a time. This book stirred up lots of trouble when it was first released, and it is easy to see why even now in 2003. The novel by Grace Metalious tells the story of a small New England town and the secrets it holds. There are many characters, all with their own foibles and secrets they are trying to keep hidden. We see the story from both male and female perspective throughout since Metalious never really favored men or women, instead just writing a story that is still very enjoyable today. Some parts are still scandalous, but Peyton Place is a book well worth a read for those who haven't read it before. Check out Peyton Place!
Book Review: Loved it! Summary: 5 Stars
Given that I'd always heard the term "Peyton Place" used to denote something trashy, gossipy and small minded, I'd expected this book to live down to it's reputation. In short, I'd expected 'mind candy.' But I was wonderfully surprised to find in this book so much more than fluff! It's a well crafted story that never disappoints with trite writing or expected paths. There's a reason PEYTON PLACE was so successful in its day - and it's not because readers ate up 'trashy' content. It's because the author handles with intelligence, depth and courage (given the time it was written) so many meaningful issues - social class, sex, incest, rape, abortion, self loathing, just to name a few.
What a great read!
Book Review: A Great Novel Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my all-time favorite novels and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys timeless writing and mesmerizing story lines. Oddly, the least captivating person in the story is the protagonist, Allison McKenzie. She comes across as a silly, dreamy girl who needs a healthy dose of gumption, but this doesn't detract from the story. I loved the patois of the regional language, and Dr. Swain is an unforgettable character. And to think Ms. Metalious was only in her twenties when she wrote this! Unfortunately, most people I know today who are in their twenties can barely slap together a complete sentence.
Book Review: A Great Read!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This was a great read in any era!!! A lot of readers who read the sequel ask how come the character of Tom Markis was changed to Mike Rossi. Grace Metalious was taken to court by some one who she knew who's real name was Tom Markis. So when the sequel "Return To Peyton Place was written, the characters name had to be changed so Grace wouldn't be back in court. In Emily Toth book" Inside Peyton Place", she writes about Graces professional and private life. This was great!!! She could have been a character out of her own book!!!!!!!!
