Book Review: Valuable Success Tool for All Persuaders!

As a social psychologist, I am an avid student of persuasion and influence. I also am a believer that everybody stands to benefit from improving their ability to communicate and persuade (and thereby influence others). Beyond the obvious applications in sales and marketing, this book made me think of numerous persuasion applications for leaders of all types, coaches, professionals, entrepreneurs, negotiators, mediators, teachers, parents, work-at-home moms and others.

Lakhani sets the tone for the book by exploring the difference between manipulation and persuasion. He revisits this important theme throughout the book and even highlights points to remind you how to view a certain situation as a potential victim of manipulation. Persuasion carries an "ick" factor for many and the author helps tease apart the valuable study of persuasion from intentional manipulation.

Some of the most useful guidance provided in this book explores the art of story telling. This was a lesson I learned as a young attorney from an experienced litigator ("What is the STORY you want to tell the jury? You need to get this clear in your head and link all of the evidence together to support this story!") Mastering the art of storytelling will provide you with a competitive edge. Lakhani's detailed guidance in storytelling is a great place to start this work.

Many also will benefit from Lakhani's step-by-step advice on becoming an expert (attaining "guru status") in 30 days.

The book is full of practical advice. Each chapter ends with key review points and a list of success questions. Take time to fully digest each chapter. Use these points and questions to generate ideas and action steps to increase your persuasion skills. Also take the time to examine the separate reference section of persuasion resources at the end of the book, including several helpful web resources.

I highly recommend that you buy this book today. Oh, and be sure to have a highlighter and notebook handy when you sit down to read it. You will find yourself marking the text and taking notes!
