Book Reviews of People of the Book: A NovelBook Review: Absolutely Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
There was an exhibit at the Smithsonian 5-6 yrs ago about an old Massachusetts home. It told the story of past occupants of the house through years of artifacts, wall paper, paint, etc that were found as the layers of the house were peeled back during a renovation then teardown. This book reminded me of that.
Stories of different people and their lives unfold by tracing back the owners of the same Haggadah. Geraldine Brooks does a fantastic job of creating captivating characters and telling their stories in each different time periods. If you like sagas and stories that follow a common thread through time, you will be glad to have chosen "People of the Book."
It is an absolutely fantastic read that you will not soon forget.
Book Review: Fictional Story of a Real Book Summary: 5 Stars
Geraldine Brooks takes the Jewish illuminated Sarajevo Haggadah, a real book, and uses it as a point of departure to create a poignant story which puzzles take place during various times, and different locations in Europe. Unusually beautiful manuscript is protected through centuries by Jews, and also unlikely allies. The story develops as the today's book conservator entrusted with preserving the gem finds various damages, or particles. Each one serves as a point of departure to tell the story, for ex.salt stains, from sea water. Geraldine Brooks is a master story teller. In addition the novel is very, very well written, which is not always the case when a writer tell stories. Literary and exciting at the same time.
Book Review: Loved the history Summary: 5 Stars
This is the third book by Geraldine Brooks that I have read and of the three, I like this one the best. We read this book for book club ... and we all decided that Hanna's mother was awful! I was a little confused the first time the story jumped from Hanna in the present day to the past with the "people of the book" ... but once I figured out that I really needed to read the chapter headings, it was all good. Each of the vignettes of the people of the book was so detailed - you really felt like you knew what their lives were like. Great read!
Book Review: New Literature Classic Summary: 5 Stars
People of the Book is a beautifully written and exciting piece of true literature. Geraldine Brooks did an amazing amount of research and so can make the characters in it seem very real and possible. The pictures of the Sarajevo Haggadah that I found match the book and make the story all the more real. It is not just a story of Jewish persecution, but also of the resilience of people and the devotion of individuals to the preservation of the written word. I bought it after I read it. I predict that this book will become a classic.
Book Review: What a wonderful book! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is probably one of the best books I have read so far. The story in this book is so refined and beautifully laid out...while I was reading it, as layer after layer unfolded, I kept thinking of this book in terms of one of those Russian dolls which sit one inside the other since this is how each one of the characters depicted in this book leads to the next. Additionally Geraldine Brooks writes beautifully and makes reading so enjoyable you get lost in her writing in addition to getting caught up in the story itself.
