Book Review: Pretty good first "professional" outing for Paperrad

THis book is pretty good, not mindblowing, but pretty very good. It came out as Paperrad was blowing up in the drug/80s/retard art market (see comment by Kathy Grayson of Deitch below). It's pretty big, so i don't feel cheated like i do when i read another contemporary "graphic novel" that i finish in an hour. I enjoy it and re-read it occasionally, but not nearly as frequently as my Kramer's Ergot books. Frankly, Jacob and Ben's humor is a little too 7th grade. (Andrew Jeffrey Wright's is too, but i always find his stuff to be a bit more interesting. But I can't really explain why. Maybe in another 5 years we can see a book by him and then compare. Dude rarely puts out big stuff). Honestly, I like the crazy colors and production and shizz, and many of the 1-page comix in the center of the book, but the overall story line is just okay. Anyway, if you like their website[...] then you'll dig this book. if you like other artists like C.F., Keith Jones, AJW, barry mcgee, then you'll probably dig this one. i'd say it's worth your time. kudos to picturebox for leading with this kind of stuff. beautiful design as always.

Half artist's book, half graphic novel, this volume combines photographs, drawings, prints, and junk by the art collective Paper Rad--Jessica Ciocci, her brother Jacob, and their friend Ben Jones--with two graphic novellas (Spaceballz and Alfe) by Jones.
