Book Review: Pancakes for Breakfast--A Classic Pre-Reader Book
Summary: 5 Stars
As a mom of two emerging readers (one 3, one newly turned 5) I have done alot of research into how children learn to read. (See note below.)
One of the key skills that appears over and over in the literature is the ability to get 'clues' as to what is going on in the story from the pictures that accompany the text.
This is one of the reasons I give this wordless book by Tomie dePaola five stars. It gives children the opportunity to practice their skills at `interpreting' and analyzing pictures. The first reason, of course, is that this book is so much fun. The drawings are expressive and funny and my kids can't seem to get enough of this wonderful story about a woman in hot pursuit of delicious pancakes.
[Also good are Mercer Meyer's wordless books.]
