Book Review: Panama of the Mind
Summary: 3 Stars

It turns out that I lived in a dorm with the author at the University of Delaware in the mid-70s, though I don't remember him. My first attempt to read the book some years ago foundered after about a chapter. This time I finally plowed through the entire 400 pages (after another stall at about page 250.) It's a story of murder and intrigue in Paris in the days following the failure of France's effort to dig what would become the Panama Canal. The title and the opening would imply a lot of information to follow about France's attempt to dig the canal, but the entire story is set in Paris, and proves to be a political, philosophical and psychological (the mind of protagonist Henry Adams) thriller. One interesting feature is a look at the early days of fingerprinting--a crimesolving technique we now take for granted, but in its infancy in Paris of the late 19th century. Given all the hooks into my life (U of D; historical fiction; enjoyment of "non-bloody" thrillers), I figured to enjoy this one more than I did. Maybe it's more for CSI fans, which I have never become.
