Book Reviews of Paint It Black: A NovelBook Review: Drug Induced Babble Summary: 2 Stars
This was disappointing. After all the good reviews I read about this book, I should have known. To me, this was just a drug induced bunch of babble. There was kind of a plot. A young girl, Josie, loses her boyfriend to suicide. His mother is a controlling witch who hates Josie but needs her to learn about the Michael she didn't know the last few years. The story telling was just not there. The book was really just a bunch of disorganized thoughts. This book was just not my cup of tea. I am not a big fan of authors who focus more on a play of words than they do telling a story.
Book Review: Sophmore Slump Summary: 2 Stars
"Paint it Black" sadly falls into the sophmore novel slump. It appears Fitch was trying to out-do "The White Oleander," and while her prose are still beautiful, the work itself is repetitive (and the themes repetitive of "Oleander"), and the main character is so annoying that it is hard to find any sympathy for her. This was an issue in "Oleander" as well, but the rest of the story was strong enough to support it. "Paint it Black" is not. Hopefully Fitch will get back on track with her next novel.
Book Review: Boring Summary: 2 Stars
Obsessed with White Oleander and therefore gave this book a shot. I was disapointed, it was quick moving in the first 1/4 however from then on out it was boring. I get it your sad, i get it your depressed, what I dont get is why there were 200+ pages of whining and self loathing with no plot. nothing really happened. Amazing writer, great take on a subculture that isn't the "norm" however as a whole it was boring and I had to force myself to finish it.
Book Review: Kept thinking "Is this going anywhere?" and "I don't care!" Summary: 2 Stars
I thought White Oleander was a great book. In fact, I thought it almost had too much going on and was amazed at how much story was packed into one book. Paint it Black is complete opposite. I never fully understood what the point of the story was. It felt like it was never really going anywhere. I'll admit that I didn't finish the last 100 pages because I just didn't care anymore.
Book Review: Paint in Black is full of despair Summary: 2 Stars
This book is extremely dark and despressing.
Every chapter seemed like the last with very little progression.
I thought White Oleander was a fantastic book about dealing with a mentally ill mother, and the challenges young women face.
I feel that the intent of this book was the same, but it did not work.
I definitely don't recommend this book.
