Book Review: A practical guide for parents and professionals
Summary: 5 Stars

Overcoming Autism was given to me by a professional that I work with. She, like myself, has a nephew diagnosed with autism. Her nephew was recently diagnosed at age three and she found this book both personally and professionally helpful. (We are both relatively new to working with children with autism.) I only wish that my family had this book so many years ago when my nephew was diagnosed. Yes, this is an excellent book for parents and professionals. The authors Koegel and LaZebnik discussed many topics that apply to everyday living from toilet training, communication, sleep, finding appropriate school placements and the list can go on and on. I found the authors to be knowledgeable regarding the issues that families face each day when a member has autism. As a member of the Child Study Team I sometimes meet parents who are not knowledgeable with early intervention programs. This book does an excellent job explaining early interventions and the various programs that a child with autism may need to be successful. Each chapter begins with at least a few questions that families frequently ask regarding the issues that they face. Each answer is practical and realistic. In addition, Koegel and LaZebnik give practical suggestions on handling psychological issues such as guilty, denial, blame, anger, etc., as well as guidance and recommendations to getting on track to help your child achieve success. The authors discuss the treatment programs that are available and the research behind those programs. They also stressed to parent to be leery of those programs that cost too much and promise the world. I found the authors to be practical in their approach and the tone of the book supportive and compassionate. They truly offer realistic hope to parents that they can have a rewarding and enjoyable relationship with their child with autism. Overcoming Autism is a practical guide for families and professionals to help children with autism achieve success and find their place in society. Ann Z.

Summary of Overcoming Autism: Finding the Answers, Strategies, and Hope That Can Transform a

There have been huge advances in our ability to diagnose autism and in the development of effective interventions that can change children?s lives. In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective ?pivotal response? approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disability?s quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child. From the shock of diagnosis to the step-by-step work with verbal communication, social interaction, self- stimulation, meltdowns, fears, and more, the answers are here-in a book that is as warm and nurturing as it is authoritative.
