Book Reviews of Outlander

Book Review: I loved the book, but..
Summary: 5 Stars

My friend gave me this book to read while I was going to Cuba for 2 weeks. By the end of one week, I was finished. I could not put this book down! I absolutely adored it. It's a romance, which is a genre that I would normally never choose, but I completely adored it. I'm 3/4 of the way through the second book, Dragonfly in Amber, and it is just as good.

Now, I've been reading these reviews for the past few minutes. I have this little quick message for all of those people who are complaining..

1) First of all, this is a ROMANCE NOVEL. If you are smart enough or anything, you would expect some sex scenes! Like, come on, think about it. You would expect sex in a romance. But take a look at some of the new action movies or anything, where the main character and some random person have sex for no reason! My point being.. DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SEX. Claire only had it in the first place because she was forcefully married to Jamie, and she had to. There was nothing she could do about it. If you remember correctly, she didn't want to because she was thinking of Frank. But she had what she had to do. So get over it. Truthfully, there was a fair amount of it, but not on every single page, as I've heard some people say! There was just enough to show that their love was growing stronger. And really, they're showing that they're HUMAN. Human beings enjoy sex. So there you go.

2) Jamie beating Claire. Hmm. Well. The story DID take place in 1743! It was normal for a husband to beat his wife! I DON'T GET IT! PEOPLE READING THIS BOOK SOMEHWO FORGET THAT THEY'RE LIVING OVER 200 YEARS AGO! Jeez! Plus, Jamie was raised to think that beating was a suitable punishment, and Claire had done something to deserve it. Besides, if you weren't thinking "OMG BEATRING MUST FAINT AND BURN BOOK ASAP", and actually read farther along, Jamie swore that he wouldn't beat her again, and that he was truely sorry for it! And In Dragonfly in Amber, he's still kept that promise! I'm 3/4 of the way through it, and nothing has happened AT ALL! My point: Remember that they're in 1743. Beating wasn't all bad and a reason to be sent to jail. PLUS IT'S A BOOK!

3) The rape. Ooh, the rape. Diana Gabaldon is NOT a woman who enjoys man to man sex! I don't think any hetro person does! Now, I have to take a deep breath, cause this annoys me a lot. First of all! Jamie was sentenced to be hung the very next day! He wanted Claire to be safe, so what else could he offer Randell? HIS LIFE? WELL HE WAS GETTING HANGED THE VERY NEXT DAY!! And, like i said above, if you weren't one of those people who were like "OMG MAN RAPE MUST FAINT AND BURN BOOK" and actually read past that, you would have fouind out that it was a BAD THING! People make it seem like the author put it out as a good thing. It almost cost Jamie his life! It took forever for Claire to heal him! And if you've read the next book, it's still bothering him! HE'S SCARRED FOR LIFE! THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING! And for you sick, sick people who say "The only people who could read this book and enjoy it are people who like male sex and abuse!". Wow. This is not true AT ALL! Claire desereved the abuse, and the rape of Jame.. I was crying during it, becuase it was so horrible! But I read on, because I wanted to see what happened to Jamie and Claire, because you get attached to the characters, and you want to make sure they're ok.

I know I'm ranting, a lot. I feel it's okay for people to say what they want, but don't accuse other people for something they're not (aka, sex, rape, and abuse lover)

Don't accuse the author of enjoying writing male rape. I'm sure she hated writing it as much as the rest of us hated reading it.

And please, DON'T say "How could anyone like this book? It's horrible, and everyone who likes it should die!"

SOME people like it. Outlander did NOT become a best seller without thousands of people loving it.

So, basically, and big SHUT UP to the people who have nothing better to do than complain about EVERYTHING. We get it if you don't like the book! You don't have to diss everything about it. You could just as easily quietly put the book down and start reading something you would like better. It's as easy as that.

5 star rating from me.

Summary of Outlander

Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach?an "outlander"?in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.

While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before.

I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness."
Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape
