Book Review: Very enlightening and interesting

I really enjoyed this book and felt it was very truthful. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly Mormons are to give any book that speaks out against their religion a bad review. The most common argument I heard when I lived in Utah for a few months was that anybody who speaks out against the Mormon religion is simply afraid that the Mormon religion is true. This is how brain-washed Mormons are. But it's not just Mormons. When I lived in the middle east the Muslims were the EXACT same way. And when my brother lived in Baltimore he said the Catholics were just as narrow-minded. The point is people are easily evolved to be what they are raised to be. They believe what they are taught - no matter how rediculous the teachings may seem to outsiders.
What really amazes me the most is how very few Mormons truly know the truths of their religion. They are not a people who will actually go out and do research and listen to all sides before making a decision. Today's Mormon leaders give a very sanitized version of Mormonism. And I speak from experience when I say that the missionary lessons that missionaires are trained to give DO NOT give an accurate portrayal of Mormonism. FAR FAR FROM IT! No new convert, unless they've done research on their own, knows the truth. I took the missionary lessons and I can tell you that the lessons are a whole different world than the outside research I did.
One in many examples is when I showed proof to the missionaries that Emma Smith and the other witnesses to the Book of Mormon all claim that Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon by putting seer stones into a hat and then covering his face with a hat the entire time. The missionaries were shocked and immediately denied that it wasn't true. Reasoning with these missionaries was impossible because they so quickly denied anything that they weren't raised with. But I couldn't blame them because I know they were raised with paintings of Joseph Smith translating the Book of Mormon by sitting at a table with the gold plates in front of him. The idea of Joseph Smith sitting on a chair with his face in a hat disturbed them. But it's a truth they didn't want to face.
They also didn't want to face that both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young married women who already had husbands. Even though this is a historical fact, the missionaries did what every other Mormon I've encounted in Utah did: They denied it.
I'm grateful I had an open mind or I'd be sitting in the "ex-Mormon" seat right now. But I truly feel sorry for Mormons because they are not in an easy position. If they find out truths and decide to leave the church, they are in for a very painful journey. It's easier for them to just hear what they are designed to hear.
Judy Robertson and other ex-Mormons who write about their experiences are very brave and courageous and I really admire their strengths. Leaving such an entrapping environment is a very difficult thing to do and most people avoid it even if it means immediately denying anything that upsets their perfect world. But the more people like Judy Robertson there are, the easier it will get for people to follow the examples.
