Book Reviews of Our Animal Friends At Maple Hill FarmBook Review: This Started My Love And Curiousity of Animals Summary: 5 Stars
I still have my original - it's a book near and dear to my heart. The illustrations are rich, varied and colorful while the story is enjoyable and down to earth.I always found the last few pages to be kind of sad, especially the spot about the lonely secton of the woods where the old dogs are buried. (I still get a little twinge of sadness when I see the illustration!) If you've ever lived on a farm you will relate to the items in the story. While some people may feel some of the items are a little harsh (i.e the "bad dogs" section), DO NOT let that steer you away from picking this book up. It's a wonderful book that has been appreciated by many people for many years and will continue to be appreciated for many years to come.
Book Review: Best. Book. Ever. Summary: 5 Stars
I first encountered this book as a young nursery school teacher in the early eighties. It became one of my favorites right away, and has remained so. I continue to ensure that classrooms have a copy, and I give it to children (and sometimes adults) as gifts.
It's so *real*, so rich. Every animal has a little bit of personality, the human relationships with them are so real. Some bits will always stick in my brain -- Max with his snake, Dinah moving rocks, dog-weighing, horses in the pond, sheep with flowers in their wool.
The illustrations are very simple, and perfectly evocative.
Every person who likes animals even a tiny bit should own this book.
Book Review: Wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
This book is incredibly captivating - my 3-year-old asks us to read it to her every night. She loves to hear all about the different kinds of animals that live on the farm, and the quirky stories about their personalities are funny. For a child who doesn't live near a real farm, this book provides in-depth insight into the day-to-day farm experiences without being boring. My daughter likes to skip around in the book rather than read it cover to cover, which helps to hold her attention, and allows her to be in control (which is big when you're 3!). I highly recommend this book to adults who get tired of reading the same books to their kids over and over - this one is very entertaining!
Book Review: A charming but unsentimental view of animals on a farm Summary: 5 Stars
This is a charming but unsentimental view of animals on Maple Hill Farm. Through wonderful drawings and brief text, animals are portrayed as individual personalities, each with a role to play in farm life through the cycles of life from birth to death. One of my favorite characters is Willow, the cat, who "is not very interesting" because she spends all her time just being beautiful. It is a valuable book for teaching young children that animals should be cherished and cared for for many reasons, that animals are deeply entwined in our lives. It is a deceptively simple book that children and adults can enjoy together and discuss on many levels.
Book Review: memories Summary: 5 Stars
This book has been a dear favorite to my daughters and I since 1973 when it was given to them by their grandmother. Being crazy animal lovers ourselves and finding the humor in the authors depiction of pets and farm animals endeared this book to us from day one. If you are an animal person you will laugh at the names and cry at the memories of lost pets all because of the unpretentious, beautiful words of this book.
Now I have given a copy to each of my three daughters for Mothers Day to enjoy with their little ones.
Five stars!
