Book Reviews of Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook

Book Review: Refines your child's palate
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is encouraging in exposing your child to wonderful, wholesome & natural flavors of organic food. I had read recently somewhere that a study showed that the longer you waited to introduce your child to solid foods, the more picky an eater you get. In other parts of the world where they don't have books like this, mothers are giving their children food from the table and their children become accustomed to their own culture's cuisine. The seasonings in this book are few and in my opinion much too conservative but that doesn't mean you can't cook to taste. The recipes are easy and spark some good ideas to start off on. I really like that it breaks it down by your baby's age & stage of development. I was surprised to find that sure enough, my children were ready for the next stage before it even occurred to me. You can get really creative. I would add sweet potato to a new dish because I knew my kids liked it and it added a tiny bit of sweetness. When introducing a new food, I always accompanied it with a food that they already liked & were familiar with. BTW, have you TASTED bottled baby food? Even the organic, freshly frozen fancy stuff is AWFUL. Once I started cooking for my kids, they refused all manufactured baby food. The downside is they like their veggies freshly prepared and will not tolerate leftovers. That part is hard. But do I love that they love their vegetables? Do I love that they prefer homemade meals to even restaurant food? You betcha.

Book Review: Great recipes, good ideas -- but would like to be more inclusive
Summary: 4 Stars

This cookbook has some lovely recipes and I applaud the authors for making most of them accessible, and without a lot of ingredients or ridiculous amounts of preparation. After all -- the recipes are for babies. I make the "days out cakes" for my family a lot, and everyone loves them; the meatballs, too, are delicious and good for all. The instructions were clear; the photos, adorable.

However! I'd like if the recipes were more inclusive, offering amounts for more than just one baby, and suggesting how to embellish the recipe for adults. The thing is, if I'm going to spend a lot of time cooking for my baby, especially if the recipes are this yummy and healthful, it would be nice if I could have the option for making the recipe for my entire family (maybe suggesting a spicier sauce for mommy & daddy, for instance). I did that anyway; it would just have been nice to have assistance and ideas from the book's authors.

Book Review: Great recipes!
Summary: 4 Stars

First let me say that there are MANY great sections on nutrition and how to feed your baby/toddler well with wonderful organic foods. Also, the recipes are excellent and my son has enjoyed almost all of the dishes I have made from this book. In some cases the portion sizes and methods are a bit impractical, but she includes prep/cook times and serving suggestions.
The first recipe I decided to make for my son was a pasta dish (I bought this book when he was over a year old), and when I looked at the ingredients I realized it was for a SINGLE serving (for a 10 month old). So,I have just decided to make larger portions and freeze some of the leftovers.

Book Review: Yummy and easy
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been making all of my daughter's baby food since she began eating solids and this is one of the two cookbooks I use regularly. She has loved everything I have made out of it - the pasta dishes are her favorite. She also loves the oatmeal and fruit breakfasts which are very easy to make. Each recipe also gives storage information. My only complaint is that she doesn't suggest waiting a few days between introducing new foods (her recipe for first veggies has about 5 different vegetables). This has been a great help in feeding my daughter healthy food. We still use jars sometimes but most of the time we pull this book out.

Book Review: Beautiful and Informative
Summary: 4 Stars

Like most books published by Dorling & Kindersley this book is a pleasure to read because of the high quality paper and plenty of colour photographs. It is well written and clearly explains the importance of organic food for babies and toddlers. There are many recipes that are original and creative, not just the standard baby food you'd expect. The only thing that was disappointing is that the book did not contain more recipes.
