Book Reviews of Oprah: A BiographyBook Review: A GREAT READ...REGARDLESS OF THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS Summary: 5 Stars
Let me premise my review, first, by saying I AM NOT AN OPRAH WORSHIPER. That being said, I can't deny the fact that Kitty Kelly's book was a fun experience. In fact, I don't think Oprah herself could have written a better biography about herself than Kitty Kelley did.
The main criticism that some of the one star reviews in Amazon.com mentioned was that that Kelley just rehashed everything that was already known about the "Oprah Dynasty". There is an old expression...a joke is always new to one that has never heard it before. Could I possibly be one of those individuals? You bet! I found the information of Oprah interesting, and often outlandishly funny. When an art dealer told Oprah the paintings she was going to purchase were in the gallery one flight up the stairs, Oprah's secretary said..."Oprah doesn't do stairs", I laughed out loud. Of course she does stairs...in fact she climbs mountains, lifts weights, and goes on weight loosing binges. (The word binges is usually used to gain weight...however, I decided the word binge could also be used for weight loss)
All kidding aside, this is a must read, even if just to amuse yourself. I loved this book. I personally don't care if some of the material was true or false from Oprah or Kitty Kelley. It was a blast to read. Don't look at those negative reviews. The people that wrote them are bimbos anyway. This is not a literary Pulitzer Prize type of literature. BUT, WHO CARES?
I mentioned earlier in my review that Oprah herself couldn't write a better book about Oprah than Kitty Kelley did. I say this with all seriousness. Oprah is a liar...and that is OK. Why shouldn't she stretch truths to protect herself? Here is a great humanitarian that believed in fighting causes. Oprah spent millions on causes. How can anyone fault her for that...even if she had to step on toes and fight others that hated her! So she said the wrong thing that wasn't politically correct on many of her talk shows. Who wouldn't? Think about it. Here is an entertainer on the air every single day of the week for one hour for twenty years. God knows, if I was lucky or unlucky enough to get that much exposure, after twenty years on the air I probably would have put my foot in my mouth a thousand times more than Oprah.
The bottom line in our society is, and probably always will be the buck anyway. And what is wrong with that? So what if Oprah promotes herself at the same time she donated s millions to fund the causes she believes in. So what if she spends millions on her family, friends, and herself to enjoy the good life. I would have done the same thing. Her critics would have done the same thing if given half a chance. It is so easy to criticize another person, famous or not. However, until one walks in another person's shoes, wearing even one of the thousands of pairs Oprah has owned over the years should not be so quick to say she idolizes only herself. Remember, she also idolizes John Travolta and Tom Cruise, and probably even the Queen of England. We are all at some time during our lives trivial beyond belief. Why shouldn't Oprah be?
What I found most fascinating and even comical about Kelley's book was how Oprah operates Harpo Productions. Basically, it is no different than any other company large or small in this country. Jealousy, nastiness, fear of losing one's job, and petty competition from workers exists in all employment milieus. The only thing that changes is the address. Harpo Productions just happens to have a famous address in Chicago. People, however, are always the same, regardless of where they work. Some people are nice...while others are rotten to the core, and will do anything to cause pain to a fellow worker. God knows, I have certainly experienced those feelings on the job. Sad...uh? You bet it is...but that is reality.
GET THIS BOOK; ANDS HAVE A BALL READING IT! YOU MIGHT EVEN WRITE TO OPRAH AND TELL HER TO PLACE KITTY KELLEY'S BOOK ON HER LITERARY RECOMMENDATIONS...Yaa...Right. Thanks for reading this review. I had fun writing it.

Summary of Oprah: A BiographyFor the past twenty-five years, no one has been better at revealing secrets than Oprah Winfrey. On what is arguably the most influential show in television history, she has gotten her guests?often the biggest celebrities in the world?to bare their love lives, explore their painful pasts, admit their transgressions, reveal their pleasures, and explore their demons. In turn, Oprah has repeatedly allowed her audience to share in her own life story, opening up about the sexual abuse in her past and discussing her romantic relationships, her weight problems, her spiritual beliefs, her charitable donations, and her strongly held views on the state of the world.
After a quarter of a century of the Oprah-ization of America, can there be any more secrets left to reveal? Yes. Because Oprah has met her match.
Kitty Kelley has, over the same period of time, fearlessly and relentlessly investigated and written about the world?s most revered icons: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Reagan, England?s Royal Family, and the Bush dynasty. In her #1 bestselling biographies, she has exposed truths and exploded myths to uncover the real human beings that exist behind their manufactured facades.
Turning her reportorial sights on Oprah, Kelley has now given us an unvarnished look at the stories Oprah?s told and the life she?s led. Kelley has talked to Oprah?s closest family members and business associates. She has obtained court records, birth certificates, financial and tax records, and even copies of Oprah?s legendary (and punishing) confidentiality agreements. She has probed every aspect of Oprah Winfrey?s life, and it is as if she?s written the most extraordinary segment of The Oprah Winfrey Show ever filmed?one in which Oprah herself is finally and fully revealed.
There is a case to be made, and it is certainly made in this book, that Oprah Winfrey is an important, and even great, figure of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But there is also a case to be made that even greatness needs to be examined and put under a microscope. Fact must be separated from myth, truth from hype. Kitty Kelley has made that separation, showing both sides of Oprah as they have never been shown before. In doing so she has written a psychologically perceptive and meticulously researched book that will surprise and thrill everyone who reads it.
