Of all the meditation books I've read, this one stands out because it can be read from any place in the book, just open it to a page and you will be filled with an author who gets it, who makes you feel good about any practice you do in meditation. There are no rules to follow and no guilt is implied if you only meditate now and then. Diana loves and breaths the joy of meditation however and whenever you engage in it.
You can be from any tradition and find this book inviting and comforting because she talks about the human condition we all know and share. We all resist, we all procrastinate, start and stop, let our thoughts take over, whatever, but the joys from regular meditation are also universal and reading her words makes you want to meditate and feel it.
The CD includes Diana talking for about 20 minutes giving us a summary of what is meditation and why do it, from her perspective which is welcoming, loving, open, non-denominational, non-judgemental and joyful. There are two guided meditations, the first one is 18 minutes and I use it weekly, and especially when I am restless and want the guidance. After using it for so long, just having her voice in the background is enough to calm me and let my mind drift into it's own place. The 2nd meditation, about the same length, seems to be for after a yoga work out (Diana is a yoga teacher) and it is quieter and more relaxed in nature. I prefer to listen to it after a silent sitting meditation, not in lieu of.
Diana's voice is clear and eloquent.The recording is perfect. A small stream or water sounds are in the backgrounds at times, very calming, but no loud music or effects to distract you. Her voice is the main sound. Her meditations are unlike others, both in her vibrant voice and the words she chooses for beautiful imagery and concepts.
This book/CD set would make a great gift for beginners as it is small and not intimidating in any way. She includes info about creating sacred space, posture, breathing and answers questions that are commonly asked by people new to meditation. It's welcoming and regular mediators will truly enjoy it was well.
