Book Reviews of One Train Later: A Memoir

Book Review: Police Man's Memoirs
Summary: 4 Stars

It's easy to imagine what Andy Summers' grammar school forms might have said--something like, " a quiet boy, imaginative, even precocious...but his curiosity might be his undoing..."

"One Train Later" is a dextrously written memoir that traverses a lot of territory. Summers begins by describing his childhood in post-war Britain, vividly describing his fascination with Nature, books, and music... which coalesces around an obsession with the guitar and the odd chord changes of American jazz.

That is what makes this autobiography piquant. Summers is a serious student among pop musicians who are mostly dilettantes. He came of age in the Sixties generation when exploring the world and expanding the mind were the norm. In his role as a "hired gun", a guitarist in search of sympathetic fellow musicians, he interacted with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Zoot Money, Eric Clapton, John Baldry, Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, and Eric Burdon. And that is just the first half of the book.

The second section begins with his chance meetings with Stewart Copeland and Sting. When they put Andy into the fold as the guitarist, the chemistry is in place that rapidly propels "The Police" into their status as Mega-Rock heroes. But first they must undergo a mindboggling amount of touring, hangers-on, seedy motels and other trials.

Summers is an intelligent and well-rounded guy, and he has a pretty impressive vocabulary. His prose at times skitters around like one of his echo-plex guitar solos... there are plenty of commas, lots of details tossed together. But in general it's a fascinating read. See Andy slog through Nepal looking for enlightenment... see Andy slipping and sliding with John Belushi in Thailand...see Andy fritter away his marriage, and then regain it.

There are alot of "Diary of a Band" type books, but this one is a cut above, from a thinking man's musician, in a field where such people seem few and far between.
I recommend it.

Summary of One Train Later: A Memoir

?A disarming, surprising literary memoir by the ex-Police guitarist . . . A rollicking you-are-there history of the 60s?80s rock era.?---Entertainment Weekly

In this extraordinary memoir, world-renowned guitarist Andy Summers provides the revealing and passionate account of a life dedicated to music. From his first guitar at age thirteen and his early days on the English music scene to the ascendancy of his band, the Police, Summers recounts his relationships and encounters with the Big Roll Band, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, the Animals, John Belushi, and others, all the while proving himself a master of telling detail and dramatic anecdote.
Andy?s account of his role as guitarist for the Police---a gig that was only confirmed by a chance encounter with drummer Stewart Copeland on a London train---has been long-awaited by music fans worldwide. The heights of fame that the Police achieved have rarely been duplicated, and the band?s triumphs were rivaled only by the personal chaos that such success brought about, an insight never lost on Summers in the telling. Complete with never-before-published photos from Summers?s personal collection, One Train Later is a constantly surprising and poignant memoir, and the work of a world-class musician and a first-class writer.
