Book Reviews of One Second After

Book Review: What would you do if the lights went out and didn't come on again?
Summary: 5 Stars

There are those who might object to Forstchen's grammar or writing style, but the story presented in "One Second After", perhaps improbable today, is frighteningly possible in the near future if not already. It's not hard to come up with a short list of countries or groups who might wish to cripple the USA for good.

What happens when electricity disappears for a long time, and I do mean long? Communications beyond shouting distance are nonexistent as is transportation except walking or pedaling. Don't count on your emergency generators or your car. They probably won't work in this scenario. The stores will be looted of food, booze, hardware, and any other available essentials. In case you smoke it will become easy to quit. There won't be any cigarettes to buy even if money was still worth anything---which it won't be.

The dying starts almost immediately. There's hunger, thirst, disease, and more. The killing starts soon and continues. Would you kill for a loaf of bread? How about for a crust of bread? How about for an ounce of dog meat---your dog? What if you or a loved one needs medication that requires temperature control? These are but a some of the situations you could face.

This is a must read even if you're not a survivalist. Forstchen doesn't paint a pretty picture. It's realistically scary. So put away your red pen so you won't be tempted to correct occasional lapses in literary style. Enjoy the story, but try to think of what you would do if the lights went out and didn't come on again.

Book Review: A Chilling Scenario
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently read James Wesley Rawles' How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times, and was impressed with his survival skills; but in all honesty, I never really pictured how that scenario would play out in the real world.

Now, thanks to William R Forstchen's chilling perspective, I've got a better idea what might happen. It wouldn't be a pretty picture.

Just as Hitchcock stirred the imagination, and scared the daylights out of us with his iconoclastic chiller, "Psycho", Forstchen delivers a similar dose of terror with this amazing novel; which depicts in graphic detail, just what would happen if this country suddenly---without warning---found itself without electricity. Forever.

Each day that passes puts society one step closer to the Dark Ages; and once friendly townfolk become ruthless, strangers become dangerous, and low-lifes become our worst nightmare. Forschen's story is a terrifying scenario; one that I never imagined possible, until I read this book.

For anyone who remembers the New York City blackout from the mid '60s---a mere inconvenience by comparison; imagine the ordeal stretched out for an entire year and beyond, with no help possible. Imagine an entire nation slowly morphing into a society of helplessnes & hopelessness. Then be grateful that hasn't happened yet; let's hope it never does happen.

Book Review: Scariest Book I Have Ever Read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of Dr. Forstchen since I read some of his sci fi while doing a tour in Iraq. Now he has written a book that could become a reality. The main character is retired Colonel John Matherson who is a professor of history at Montreat College in Black Mountain,nc, his two daughters, one of whom has Type 1 diabetes and his mother in law.One afternoon the lights go out and never come back on.Colonel Matherson pulls out a paper that he had written while teaching at the Army War College and comes to the conclusion that the USA has been hit by EMP (elctro magnetic pulse) which is the result of a nuclear explosion in the atmosphere (three bombs in fact are set off about 200 miles in the atmosphere). Not only are the lights are out but all modern electrical items are affected including cars.
People panic! Many people start to die off within the first few days and weeks of this EMP attack:those on dialysis, life support,in nursing homes, diabetics, etc.Weeks, months pass by and the community tightens its belt to the fact that they are facing disease, lack of medicine, starvation, and attack by a gang called the "Posse".Colonel Matherson with his leadership ability takes the helm at a high personal cost to himself. You will definitely shed a few tears if you read this book. I did! Having been involved in relief/combat operations in the past stressful situations will always bring out the best and the worst in people. READ THIS BOOK!IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK ABOUT THE REAL WORLD THREAT THAT OUR COUNTRY IS FACING FROM IRAN,NORTH KOREA,CHINA, ETC.

Book Review: Best Apocalyptic survival story ever written
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read them all, all the "end of the world" novels, survival books, magazine articles, you name it, I've searched it out and read it. Not sure why but I enjoy this type of reading, it's thrilling to me and at the same time greatly makes me appreciate all that we have. This book was a page turner, from page 2 onward, I couldn't put it down. And it's not science fiction at all, the scenario is all too frighteningly possible. The medical information in the book is accurate. I also felt the psychological aspects of people's behavior in such a situation was amazingly well depicted. And the man's love for his family and the sadness of it all were just riveting. Very few books I've ever read have made me have tears in my eyes when one of the characters died! Yeah, I really liked this book. I love so many of the others, Earth Abides was good in it's way, Alas Babylon was great in some ways, so many and some very obscure one's I've found. But again to me this is the best of them all. This single book changed my perception of the world around me, and in a good way. It made me want to be kind to people even more than normal, and help people out even more than normal. It like woke me up a little bit, the world seems more vivid and clear after reading this book. This book really had a profound effect on me, but then I always really get into books and feel like I'm right there with the characters when the book suspends reality so well. Someone make this into a movie! Please! And unlike War of the Worlds by Spielberg, please don't star Tom Cruise in it. lol

Book Review: A spectacular, eye-opening, heartfelt read...
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first experience with Forstchen's work, and to say that I'm incredibly impressed would be an understatement. Some of the other, and obviously far more cynical, reviews of this books attacked it for the occasional typos and adjective overuse, however that should not deter anyone from making this a part of their library. I'm also an author, and what can I say, it happens. We tell stories, editors edit. Period. One Second After has it all; a wonderfully-crafted plot, deep emotion, brilliantly-crafted characters, a wealth of fun historical facts, and a storyline that makes it extremely difficult task to put down. What makes this book so totally fascinating is that its main premise--an EMP attack--could be successfully executed by the time I'm done writing this review, or by the time you're done reading it. The author does an exceptional job of covering details that most of us would struggle to even consider thinking about; yet he explains and weaves them into this masterpiece with sheer precision. Those who have read it will undoubtedly agree that they will never look at power outages the same way again.

There's not enough I can say about One Second After. I hope that, as many books do, this reaches those who are in a position to protect not only individuals with the political rights to bunkers and food and medicine, but also regular people who love life, and the many freedoms which we so often take for granted. Buy it. You'll have absolutely no regrets whatsoever.
