Book Reviews of Once Upon A Time

Book Review: Excellent replay value
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I watched this game being played, I thought it seemed a bit boring and difficult. But when I actually had a chance to play... wow, I don't often laugh that hard. We played four games in succession, and stopped only because we all had to get up early the next morning.

With four or five players, a typical game lasts about 30 minutes, so it's good at small parties when you don't want to commit to something too time-consuming. Heck, it'd be good at the airport, waiting for your delayed flight, if you're traveling with the family. Adults and children can play this game together, so long as everyone has a good imagination. The rules aren't complicated, and it only takes one game to get the hang of it.

It's amazing to watch a story line, one that you think is a dead-end, be transformed by another player's intriguing (and often hilarious) plot twist. It really gets you thinking creatively. I wish I'd found this game before starting my NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) story--it would've come in handy.

Book Review: Innovative, fun, hilarious, and distinctly yours
Summary: 5 Stars

As soon as it was introduced Once Upon A Time became an instant favorite. Most games will tell you that it CAN be played by all ages. This one actually is a favorite of all ages. Eventually Catch Phrase or Taboo type games will grow repetitive as each round is the same and you exhaust all the clues in the limited number of expansions. This game can be completely different every single time, never grows old, and can be anything from deadly serious to hilarious to political commentary.

When I play with my group of 20 to 30 somethings, we sometimes make variants on the rules, which is an easy thing to do and can lead to all sorts of fun change-ups. We'll play blind ending co-op, 1 card no interruption turns, etc. The game lends itself to fun twists without a lot of thought.
We also introduced an "all characters must be named" rule to keep track of everything, and this also has led to hilarious or very fun scenarios and often puts everybody on the same theme.

Book Review: Fantastic Game for Those Who Imagine
Summary: 5 Stars

Stumbled upon this game and simply cannot recommend it enough. If you have even a little bit of a storyteller in you, you should love it, and it's great for a group of imaginative friends. My favorite part about the game is the endless variants you can come up with using a little imagination... my friends and I have come up with at least seven different ways to play it so far and everyone is a blast.

Do note that this is a game about your imagination, so if you want to be hand-held and play a game that guides you through its experience, this is not the game for you. It requires active thinking and actively making up stories on your own based on very sparely written prompts, so you need be ready to think and stretch your creative muscles for it. If you are open to dreaming out loud, though, and challenging yourself while you do it, this is the perfect game for the creative mind.

Book Review: Best Card Game EVER
Summary: 5 Stars

We played this game with 4 people all over the age of 25. We started at 10 pm had 3 games and stopped at 1am. It was the funniest, most creative card game we've ever played, and this is a group of avid gamers.
I would recommend this game to anyone who loves to use their imagination and isn't too hung up on plot holes lol. We're going to create cards that can interrupt when ever there is a Monty Python reference or a Princess Bride parallel, just to name a scant few.
Hours of fun, loads of laughs and only as much competition as you want. (My take on it is to see how long a person can go with a farm animal card and an island....dang it that's a Lost reference)

Book Review: A favorite for all
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend introduced me to this game and after only playing it once, I knew I had to get it for myself. The very day I bought it, my family and I spent hours playing it. It really helps your storytelling abilities and it teaches you how to think quickly. I believe that children and adults of all ages would enjoy playing this game. The artwork is fantastic and I love that they provide blank cards for you to come up with your own story elements. As a writer, I also find the storytelling helpful in exercising my own creative talents. Everyone should at least play it once. I warn you, its very easy to get hooked after only one time!
