Book Review: Just Precious

I am very picky when it comes to children's books. I've read a lot and I have a list of my favorites. Usually they are the classics, Guess How much I love you and The Giving Tree, books like that. But this one came out of nowhere for me and it is so beautiful I almost cried in the book store. It starts out something like, On the night you were born your name was carried in the wind and when the polar bears heard they danced all night, so when you visit the bears at the zoo and they are sleeping you know why and when you see two lady bugs sitting perfectly still you'll know why, or something like that. I loved the idea of the child later seeing these things we all do, the moon following the car, the ladybugs sitting still, the sleeping bears and they remember how very special they are, like they are the one, like they can make the stars dance. The art and words in this book are beautiful. I have purchased it for many new babies since I first discovered it, and for some older children as well. The basic premise of the book is that the universe celebrates a baby's arrival on the planet. I'd like to give an exact quote, but have given away my last copy. The general idea is this: bears danced, geese flew, frogs sang, in celebration on the night you were born because there never has been and never will be another exactly like you. The world will never be the same again because now you are in it.
What a concept! This is what every child needs to hear and know. You are a special, unique being in this world and it is a better place because you are here. What a marvelous message for a child to hear again and again. What a wonderful welcome to the world, or affirmation of a child's worth in this world.
Book Review: Appeals to All Ages

This book's lovely message appeals to people of all ages. I bought "On the Night You Were Born" as a gift for my granddaughter's first birthday. I love reading it to her over and over, and I also read it aloud to my 7th-grade students on their birthdays. Throughout the reading, the entire class whispers the birthday boy's or girl's name. It's amazing how much 12 and 13 year olds enjoy hearing the story and participating in reading it. Even more amazing is how much my coworkers enjoy having the story read to them! When a coworker has a birthday, my students and I enter the teacher's classroom singing Happy Birthday and I then read "On the Night You Were Born." It seems everyone enjoys hearing how the entire universe celebrated their birth. This is a excellent and thoughtful birthday present for children ages 1 to 101!Book Review: A lovely, adoption-friendly book.

I first heard this book at the Mother's Day Tea at my daughter's preschool. When I heard the title, my stomach clenched. Because my daughter is adopted, her birth is an event I had no part in. I initially thought that the selection was a little thoughtless.
I should have had more faith in my daughter's wonderful teacher. As "Miss Ro" read the book, I realized that the story was about the birth of a child is a gift to the world of nature (not to her parents and family as most books treat it). I have since given this book to other new children in my world, and consider it one of the loveliest, most magical books I have read. Every child should feel as though her/his birth has impacted the whole world, as this book suggests.
This book is an excellent addition to any pro-adoption collection.
Book Review: Simply Wonderful!

This book is so wonderful!! I bought it while I was pregnant and couldn't wait to read it to my son. My son was born and needed surgery immediately after birth. We spent a month in the NICU and I read it to him every day, it was our special time together. In the beginning, the book was so touching, I would cry every time I read it. Fast forward 2 years and he's 26 months and I still read it to him almost every day. He loves it and it's a good time between the two of us.
My baby always smiles and feels so special when I read it to him. It even soothes him when he's sick and wants extra attention. The illustrations are gorgeous and grab his attention. The message is wonderful and helps form self-esteem. I'm grateful to the author for writing such a beautiful book and I recommend it to all parents!!
