Book Reviews of On the Edge of NowhereBook Review: An inspiring, awesome true tale of adventure Summary: 5 Stars
Considering the few reviews this book has received, and the long wait to get the book if you order it (one-two months as of now), I have to say this is a very overlooked book. If it had the right marketing and promotions I could easily see it becoming a bestseller. If you like true life adventure, than this book is for you. The first chapter is about Jim's mother's 1000 mile trek on foot by herself from Nome to her home to be with her children. Her incredible spirit and drive is so inspiring--you have to keep reminding yourself this is a true story. If it wasn't, you would never believe it. Jim's story of his own life is just as captivating. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, true stories, tales of Alaska and frankly, anyone who likes to read! Order the book now and even if it takes two months to arrive, it will be a treat when it does.
Book Review: Please order more, Amazon. Summary: 5 Stars
I think I bought the last eight copies, so please order more, Amazon. I teach high school in the Alaskan bush, and it is extremely difficult to find books that my non-readers enjoy reading that also have academic value. This book, and "Shadows on the Koyukuk" by Sidney Huntington, Jimmy's brother, have given my students insight into the transition between traditional Native culture and current native culture with its White influence and inclusion. My copies are going into the Alaska History tub of materials from our district resource center, to be shared by the other schools in our district. We will need more copies.
Book Review: Should be a movie Summary: 5 Stars
"My mother walked a 1000 miles across Alaska." Jimmy Huntington's narrative on his life starts with his mothers incredible story and continues with his own lifetime of Alaskan adventures. From killing three bears with an axe and a .22 rifle, to winning the North American Sled Dog competition; Jimmy's life ranks with the best adventure stories I've read...and his is all true. When I lived in Alaska Jimmy was considered a real hero. A friend I gave this book to called me the next day and said she was angry because she couldn't stop reading it and stayed up until 4AM. I have purchased and given away 6 copies.
Book Review: Wonderful and fast read! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book. It was a very quick read and kept me interested at all times. As one reviewer noted, it is like listening to an elder relative recounting their life story. After spending 3 weeks around Alaska, it was just wonderful to hear about the author's experiences in the wilderness. I can't say enough about this book. It really brings home how the "simple" but not "easy" life can be more rewarding and enriching than our current fast-paced lives.... I highly recommend this for a weekend read!
