Book Reviews of On the Banks of Plum Creek (Little House, Book 4)

Book Review: On the Banks of Plum Creek
Summary: 5 Stars

The storm hit; fast and furious. It happened one mild winter day when Pa walked to town to get some food for his family. It was a sunny day when he left home. But on the way back it happened. He was stuck; he needed to find shelter, and quick. There was no way he would be able to get back into town, and no way for him to get home safely. Pa found a cave, and he hid out for the night; a cold, hungry and scary night for him, and a very scary night for his family who didn't know if he was safe. He only had some candy in his pocket and a bag of oysters. Does he make it back to his family? This is one of the many realistic events that make this book so hard to put down.
On the Banks of Plum Creek is the fourth book in the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This series is historical fiction based on the author's life, and takes place in the late 1800s. The book is published by HarperCollins in 1937, and it became a Newbery Honor Book in 1938.
Laura Ingalls Wilder used language in the book to make you feel like you were there. Being someone who lives in the Mid West, (that is where the book takes place), it is probably much more important to read this series because it offers you a piece of your history in the area in which you live.
In this book there are suspenseful scenes that keep you waiting for the climax to come. One of the suspenseful scenes is the one about Laura's pa in the blizzard. To us now, I bet it wouldn't be so hard to be in that blizzard, but they didn't have the kind of things that we have now; such as snow pants, warm winter coats, hats and mittens, boots. Also, we have cars, cell phones, and all kinds of other technology that would help us avoid those kinds of situations.
Laura is 7 years old when this book begins. She, along with her family, is going in a covered wagon from the Indian Territory in Kansas to the Dakota Territory in Minnesota. When they get to the Dakota Territory, Laura, Ma, Mary, and Carrie are on the down side; they are struggling because they are going to live in a house made of sod, grass, wood, dirt, and hay until their home is built. On the Banks of Plum Creek describes in stories how they have to find work to get money to survive, how they learn to live in a new place, and how they work to build a new home and a new life.
I am reading the whole series, and once I finish one book, I go to the library or the book store to get the next one. I would rate the book 9.5 on a scale of 0-10. I would recommend this book (and the entire series) to people who like real life adventures, historical fiction, and like to connect with the characters. You can follow the life of Laura (main character), her older sister Mary, her younger sister Carrie, and her Ma and Pa through important happy times and struggles during the late 1800s.
If and when you read the book, I hope that you will connect with the stories and characters too.

Summary of On the Banks of Plum Creek (Little House, Book 4)

For the first time in the history of the Little House books, this new edition features Garth Williams? interior art in vibrant, full color, as well as a beautifully redesigned cover.

The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as they leave their little house on the prairie and travel in their covered wagon to Minnesota. Here they settle in a little house made of sod beside the banks of beautiful Plum Creek. Soon Pa builds a wonderful new little house with real glass windows and a hinged door. Laura and her sister Mary go to school, help with the chores, and fish in the creek. At night everyone listens to the merry music of Pa's fiddle. Misfortunes come in the form of a grasshopper plague and a terrible blizzard, but the pioneer family works hard together to overcome these troubles.

And so continues Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.
