Book Review: Excellent history of the Ramones by an insider

If you enjoyed the excellent history of punk, "Please Kill Me," you should love "On the Road With the Ramones." Although the book is written primarily from the perspective of Melnick, road manager and long-time friend of the band, the narrative format -- where many voices with very different takes are also heard -- makes for a balanced, funny, sometimes heartbreaking history of a band that never got the recognition -- or the record sales -- it deserved until it was almost too late. If, like me, you were a fanatic from the minute you saw them onstage in the mid-70s, or you're a kid who just recently discovered them, this book is a must -- the best book on the Ramones I've ever come across.
