Book Review: Plot dragged a little, but decent action and historical feel

I like this author's way with words and language. This was an interesting and brutal world that was set-up, and that felt realistic, with caste systems, shifting political allegiances, and the bonds of duty and honor. Azrael is indeed introduced as a very violent and implacable figure, but you come to accept that it is the greater good of her army and her kingdom that drives her actions. Ursula is a beautiful slave with a sunny disposition who seems to weather the terrors her life throws at her by not dwelling on the negative. Fortunately for her, Azrael rescues her from disobedient soldiers in the beginning and takes her as a body slave, growing more and more attached to her as the army journeys back to her home.
Despite the strengths in describing action, I found this book to be lacking, or at least not to my taste. In my opinion the characters were rather simply or shallowly constructed. Their motivations were consistent, but in my mind there wasn't enough justification for the immediacy with which love developed between them. A couple of poignant scenes does not true love make. True, the acknowledgment of such spanned several months, but their interactions didn't give it the weight it needed to make me really believe it. And meanwhile the plot meandered along much like the army on its two-year march. Much time was spent on the physical descriptions of logistics and scenery, and less on the internal journeys of each character, which is what I enjoy in books, and despite the quality of the sentence-construction I was left wondering as I skimmed another description of buildings and countryside why I should really even care. With no real direction, there was nothing to anticipate.
This author wrote one of my favorite books in Tiopa Ki Lakota, so I'm still a fan, but this book was not for me. If you're satisfied with a well-constructed kingdom, some good action-packed bits, and a bit of warlord-slave interaction, then you'll likely find this book a pleasant diversion. It is a fairly short and quick read. But if you're looking for anything with much depth as far as character-study, you will be disappointed.
Summary of On Azrael's Wings
Ursula, a seamstress's slave, survives the brutal attack on her village by the King's Butcher, General Azrael of the Third Army. Due to circumstances beyond her control she's thrust into the role of body slave for the infamous woman, and must learn to please her new mistress in all ways or end up on the slaver's block. Azrael only wishes to retire at her estate, but her king has other ideas. In fact, King Shonal has many ideas Azrael cannot abide, and one of them has to do with demanding sexual favors from her newly acquired body slave...the one she's unaccountably fallen in love with.Contemporary Books
