Book Review: Well written, but. . .
Summary: 3 Stars
Old Yeller is a well written, evocative slice of early Texas frontier life focused on a young boy's bond with a dog. But that's all it is, and I contend that this isn't really a story at all, but rather a long situation drawn out to the inevitable end that isn't even a surprise.
There are a couple of story questions here, namely, how does old yeller die, and, will travis get his horse. But neither one of these drives the book. Instead we get very rich and detailed descriptions of Travis' different tasks on the farm, along with a few thinly drawn main characters. The end comes with cold, objective bluntness. Although there is a sort of theme stated at the end, none of the scenes leading up to this theme support it. Gipson uses a few author tricks and gimmicks to jerry-rig a satisfying resolution (repetition of earlier images/phrases), but I didn't find it effective.
This book has plot flaws, but for people drawn to the world Gipson creates, it will satisfy.

When a novel like Huckleberry Finn, or The Yearling, comes along it defies customary adjectives because of the intensity of the respouse it evokes in the reader. Such a book, we submit, is Old Yeller; to read this eloquently simple story of a boy and his dog in the Texas hill country is an unforgettable and deeply moving experience.
