Book Reviews of Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Book Review: CLASSIC SUESS
Summary: 5 Stars

Oh, the Places You'll Go! is the last book ever written by famous children's author Dr. Seuss. The book concerns life and its challenges. The story was turned into an extremely corny introduction to this year's Super Bowl featuring among others Harrison Ford.

A traditional way to end the school year at any grade level is for the teacher to read his or her students the classic Dr. Seuss picture book, Oh, the Places You'll Go! The book, published in 1990 by Random House, still is an enjoyable anecdote that reflects on the trials and tribulations of growing up and proceeding through life, all the while using Seuss' trademarks of simple rhyme and surrealist imagery. Oh, the Places You'll Go! would seem familiar to fans of previous Dr. Seuss classics such as Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat. Seuss once again utilizes his uncanny ability to use fanciful rhymes and whimsical words to weave a charming and entertaining tale that could no doubt amuse readers of any age. Unlike many of Suess's better known works, Oh, the Places You'll Go! lacks any specific characters other than a narrator and the reader. A young lad referred to simply as "you" initiates the action of the story. However, the lack of a main character helps readers to identify with the book. The pages of Oh, the Places You'll Go! are filled with bright and colorful illustrations that exceed the limits of imagination. A journey through the pages of this book is a journey through life itself. One finds one's way to the "Waiting Place... for people just waiting," "the bright places where Boom Bands are playing" and, of course, to, "Great Places," where one's own future lies.

Book Review: Oh the things you could do!
Summary: 5 Stars

Oh, the Places You'll Go! is an uplifting and encouraging book describing a major life lesson that is applicable to children and adults alike. The book is a promoter of focusing on the positive and moving quickly past the negative. The narrator addresses the reader through the small boy that appears in almost every illustration. Your life is seen and addressed through the eyes of this small boy. The book describes many situations that one may encounter in life, such as facing an unfamiliar place or situation, Seuss questions whether the reader will stop, or will they go on. He comments that life may be confusing, but waiting for others to control your life will not allow you to achieve the "places that you'll go". He encourages his reader to be ready for anything, and to not be afraid to be out there alone. Continuing on will allow you to succeed, even through the most difficult dilemmas you may face.
Teachers could use the text as an example of well-crafted poetry, an example of how to incorporate many different text qualities into poetry. This book would be best to use when introducing poetry, to discuss how that even though it is a poem, with poetic qualities - poems still contain the conventions and styles that traditional stories and writings contain. This book also has varying examples of metaphors and similes, they are simple, so it is easy for the early elementary student to grasp. Oh the Places You'll Go is a great example of traditional poetry, which can be used in many ways to introduce poetry and rhyme scheme in the classroom.

Book Review: Oh, the Places You'll Go
Summary: 5 Stars

As I embark on yet ANOTHER new chapter of my life, I find I am constantly questioning my every move, encountering new crossroads and rebuilding my somewhat depleting self-belief. Last night my best friend Shannon called me on the phone asking if she could read me a bedtime story. It's been more than 20 years since someone asked me if they could read to me before bed but I instantly reverted to my childhood and out of habit curled up in bed and asked 'what's the book called' before she even opened a page. As the words flowed through her lips, I was dumbfounded at how closely it related to my own life ... it was like Dr. Seuss wrote ME a book. Oh, the Places You'll Go answered EVERY question I have been asking myself for months. All my 'what ifs' 'ands' or 'buts' are no more. All too soon, Shannon came to the end and closed the book, I was speechless and tearful but ironically, I had new zest and energy pumping through my veins ... I wanted to jump to my feet and scream 'I'm going to do it ... I'm going to climb to the top!!! Dr. Seuss makes reference to people in the 'waiting period' where so many of us stay out of fear ... I'm not scared any more!!! No matter how old one is when they pick up this book, it will reflect on their present life and put it into perspective. The next time you find yourself 'questioning', pick up Oh, the Places You'll Go, or better yet have someone read it outloud .. listen to the words, let them seep through your pours and I guarantee ... Dr. Seuss will inspire :)

Book Review: I owe this book my life
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't receive this book upon graduation or success, or during any sort of right of passage moment. This book was read to me when I was on the verge of suicide. My depression had put blinders on me, and I could see it in the distance as a warm, easy option that I could take and no one would be mad or disappointed, or at least not so's I'd notice. Then my friend read this book to me.

At first I rolled my eyes. "Why congratulate? Today ISN'T my day. Today is garbage." It continued on about how well I would do and all the nifty things I'll accomplish, and how I would continuously meet with success.

Except when I don't. Because sometimes, I won't.

She read about confusion and horror. She read about being in a slump, about having to wait, about being alone and how it makes you see things that scare you. I cried.

"But on you will go
though the weather be foul.
On you will go
though your enemies prowl.
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl.
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike,
And I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are."

Buy this book. Read it to someone you care about, not at their highest point, but their lowest. At that moment these are the words that can save a life. I know that they saved mine.

Thank you for reading.

Book Review: A perfect gift for OLDER adults!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've gifted this book to high school and college grads and I've gifted it to older adults and I'd have to say, I think the full depth and import of this book's important and inspirational message is almost lost on anyone less than 25 years old.

This book came into my life when I was busy making hard choices and having a very difficult time. It was instrumental in lifting me out of a very dark and deep slump. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone who needs a little hit of joy and light in their life.

For a time, I worked as an editor at a Christian magazine. I learned that the children's articles were the most popular articles in our magazine - for both children and adults! The reason was, the simplicity of the children's articles really spoke to the hearts of the adults.

That's the beauty part of "The Places You'll Go." The simplicity of this message is easily and readily understood by one and all. Children may enjoy the sing-songy rhythms of the book but adults will appreciate its amazing depth and inspiration.

"With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
You're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course
you'll head straight out of town."

It really is a beautiful manual for life, reduced to 911 words, and expressed in language we can all understand and enjoy. I highly recommend this book.
