Book Review: We read this book every night
Summary: 5 Stars
My mother-in-law, a former first grade teacher, gave this book to us along with a few others. The first night I read this book to my twin two year old boys, I had tears in my eyes. My voice was cracking a little as I read each page to them. I work full-time and take classes one to two evenings per week. While I would prefer to be spending my days at home with them as a stay-at-home mom, I need to work to help support our family and provide health insurance. It's really hard to drop the boys off at school each day knowing I would rather be home with them and they would rather be with me.
The significance of this book is that the story is about a mother who drops her child off at daycare/school while she is at work. The story explains that even while the child is playing at school, the mother loves the child. When the mother is working, she is thinking of the child and loves the child.
We started reading the story nightly as the last book before bed. We shut the lights off and I read it by this little portable nightlight. Within a few weeks, the boys started assisting me with reading. I would read a few words, pause, and then they would fill in the blank. They loved it! The boys were still having some issues at drop off and would cry each time I would leave. They have been in daycare since they were 6 weeks old and here they were, at 2 1/2, still crying at drop off. One day, I decided to recite the first three pages of the book to them (up to the part where it says the "like the sun is with the sky"). I would hug them and they would say it with me (all three of us had the first three pages memorized by this point). It was fabulous. They loved it and I loved it. It is now our morning drop off ritual.
Fast forward one year later, my twin boys are now 3 1/2 years old. We still read it every single night. They almost have the entire book memorized. Often, they start reciting and pause for me to fill in a word. The role reversal is so cute! Sometimes I read and replace a word just to see if they are paying attention. They always catch it and they laugh with that real belly laugh.
I absolutely love this book. It's a wonderful story about the love a mother has for her child. It's really not a "baby" book. I could see myself quoting from this book when my kids go to high school, college, or get married. This is definitely a family tradition and treasure. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
