Book Review: So Good You'll Read It While Blow-drying Your Hair

There are some books that are so good, you just can't wait until the end of the day to get to them. Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons, is one of those books. This is a "read while you are drying your hair" good, a "read while you are waiting in line for coffee" good, a "put off cleaning or cooking dinner" good book.
Beautifully written with elegantly crafted sentences that flow effortlessly from one to another, this book is a sheer pleasure from start to finish. Lily has just lost her husband of many years. She escapes to her childhood summer home to grieve, a home that is so skillfully described that you want to pack up and get to Maine as soon as you possibly can.
Soon Lily is taking the reader back into time to when she was eleven and experiencing her first taste of real life. Surprisingly, and not unpleasantly, the author has the reader remembering their own coming of age experience as they read about the magic and the trauma that Lily faces. Lily's story is woven with sensitivity and poignancy.
We learn to care deeply about her mother, her father, her first love Jon, and her husband, Cam. The character development is so good, that by the time Lily is in present day, we feel that we know her intimately. The writing is always fresh, believable and interesting. What's more, the ending will blow your socks off. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
