Book Reviews of Now, Discover Your StrengthsBook Review: Now, Discover Your Strengths Summary: 5 Stars
In order to get the maximum benefit out of this book, you have to read the first book, "First, Break All the Rules". As someone who has been in education, and then sales, training, management and marketing, I found both these books refreshing and right on the money. Corporations spend way too much of their training dollars focused on what people do wrong ("improvement opportunities") and not nearly enough expanding on people's strengths. One of the highlights of "Now, Discover Your Strengths" is an internet-based quiz you can take to discover your own strengths and talents. Mine was right on the money and helped me clearly identify my true talents. Once you know what they are you can strive to place yourself in workplace situations where these talents can shine. When individuals shine, so then do their organizations. Both these books are a must for any executive who wonders why their organization isn't as successful as they would like.
Book Review: Work around weaknesses, but the key to success is to focus on your strengths Summary: 5 Stars
The main message is: discover your strengths and focus on them. The most common thing to do, and totally widespread, is to fix your weaknesses rather than focus on improving your strengths. And this is what this book shows that it's wrong. I realized that myself recently, what draw me to this book that confirmed my experiences. Each individual is unique, what is wonderful, and we need to accept this fact - starting with ourselves. We will not excel at everything we do, and one of the reasons is that this is hard-wired in our brains during our growth process. Forget about review process and review sessions with your manager who point your improvement areas. Or better, work around them, as they cannot be roadblockers, but don't worry if you never become as good as other people. You and I have talents that can be improved and lead to fantastic strengths when combined with knowledge and skills. This is what can lead you to your success.
Book Review: What a Novel Concept Summary: 5 Stars
By Jeffrey W. Bennett, ISP, author of ISP Certification-The Industrial Security Professional Exam Manual and Under the Lontar Palm
This book turned me upside down. What a novel concept, to focus on what our strenghts are. I used excerpt from this excellent book in a time management presentation for my coworkers. How else can you perform at your peak unless you are doing something you absolutely love. When you know your strenghts, it's easier to focus on being successful where you are. If you are concerned about weaknesses, then you are spinning your wheels. It's like Pareto's Principle. You need to focus your efforts on the 20% that makes 80% of the results and this books shows you how.
Book Review: An amazing insight into finding our talents Summary: 5 Stars
I was recommended this book but did not pick it up after buying it for some time. Once I did pick it up I had trouble putting it down.
The focus on this book is how to discover your strengths using a Gallup online 45 minute timed evaluation. This gives you your top 5 core strengths with an explanation and examples. Now, if this was all the book gave me then I would have given it maybe 3 stars.
However, the book explains in detail how we are required to focus our lives both personal and professional on these core strengths. They are the key to getting a life we want to live. I have to agree.
There is a brilliant introduction as to how our brains develop and in turn creat unique individuals with unique talents and abilties. Yes I know it may sound corny and very self help oriented but it was an eye opener for me.
Highly recommended.
