Julian Barnes is a wonderful essayist. The writing is rich in literary sources and in keen observations. Death has been on the author's mind since at a young age and he thinks about it regularly. The author's subject is the process of his facing the prospect of the time when he ceases to be. This short book is not exactly an autobiography but contains materials from his childhood, youth and his family including his parents' old age and deaths. In spite of the subject, he is not morbid and he is funny and writes about ironic facts or situations with wit. It is a slow read but worth the time to do it.
