Book Reviews of Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook

Book Review: a great addition to my kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book so much that i have given it as a gift to my mother, sister, and mother-in-law. Its true that some of them recipes have prep time to them, some require adding ingredients midway, some have short cooking times, but every recipe i have tried from this has worked out great! I never thought i would use a crock-pot as much as I have this year, and i doubt that i would be using it very much at all if i did not have this book. I have a couple of other crock-pot cookbooks. This is the only one i use.

Very good collection of recipes and tips. I have been a slow cooker user for more years than I like to admit, mostly for soups, stews and pot roasts. This collection, however, took me into areas I had not considered. I highly recommend the granola recipes, as well as the poached whole chicken, which really fills the house with a wonderful aroma (and it tastes great, too). It really goes beyond the standard tried-and-true crock pot meals.

Book Review: Start cookin'!

This is a great book, but I didn't look close enough. For the price (under $8.00) I was expecting a small book with a few recipes and didn't really review the listing. This is a thick book with a number of categories, including many you wouldn't expect in a slow cooker cookbook. Good book...Great value...Easy recipes!

Book Review: Great recipes

I got this book in tandem with my new slow cooker, and I have to say it's been great. The recipes are creative and everything I've tried to make has turned out perfectly. Try the Italian sausage and bell peppers recipe. Delish!

Book Review: Recommended with precautions

So, it's NOT your mama's cookbook. Don't expect the cream soup dump and cook recipes here, it's not the books intent.
I for example rate this book pretty high because I LIKE cooking as much as I can in my slow cooker. I hate using the oven and especially my awful cooktop. This book has some sort of inconvenient recipes which must be done on weekends if you work all day.
Also remember that you can change the spices to your liking. Those complaining that the recipes are bland - well there is no law against adding more. You do not have to brown all your meat, either. Most of this will come out fine unbrowned. However, some of the gravy's will comeo out better if you coat the meat with flour first and either brown slightly or not. Cornstarch mixed in a little water is my fave slow cooker gravy thickening agent.
I didn't give it a 5 however, because of one serious problem I found with a recipe. Did anyone actually test the Guiness roast recipe? Combining the most bitter veggies on earth, eggplant and turnips, with Guiness beer, is an awful idea. Even the orange zest and carrots did nothing to remove the bitterness. We literally had to give this one to the dogs.
Otherwise, most everything is pretty good. I love love all the breakfast porrige recipes. Finally I can serve my husband what he likes for breakfast occasionally without having to get up super early.

I also found some of the Cajun recipes a joke, but then I'm from south La, and I find most recipes for cajun cooking from anyone other than a 4th generation cajun laughable. Not to say you can't adapt. These cajun recipes have definitely been adapted.
If you are looking for a slow cooker cookbook that does have very easy fast recipes (and not everyone of them involving cream soup), including cajun fare, try Julie Kay's Slow Cookin' in the Fast Lane.
