Book Reviews of Not Without My DaughterBook Review: Fascinating and suspenseful! Summary: 5 Stars
In this fascinating book, Betty Mahmoody relates the story of her life as the wife of an Iranian man who was a doctor in the U.S. when she met him. Although possessed by moods of depression, Moody is a loving husband and father most of the time. When his nephew comes to visit, they begin to plan for Moody's family to come to Iran for a two-week vacation. Betty suspects that Moody may try to detain them in his native land, but she relents when he promises on the Koran that this will not be the case. They go to Iran, where Betty finds Moody's relatives to be rude and arrogant, as well as having filthy houses and bodies. She cannot wait for the 2 weeks to be over, but when the time comes to return to the States, Betty's worst nightmare comes true when Moody detains them. While he is in Iran, Moody's word is law and no one can interfere with his decision to keep his family there. What follows is a nightmare of beatings, harrassment, and virtual imprisonment, as Moody returns to his traditional Islamic ways. This is an incredibly eye-opening book, and the courage of Betty and her daughter during their ordeal is inspiring.

"Not Without My Daughter" is a very intriguing book. It's like once you start reading it you start reading it you just can't stop. Every chapter leaves you wondering whets going to happen next. It makes you want to give a cry out for help so she can get home and be with sick father before he dies. Even though she had a chance to leave and go to America by herself she wouldn't leave without her daughter. She knew if she had left her child in Tehran she would never see her again. I think that Betty is a very strong and courageous woman because she did not give up and she adapted to every thing that was going on it Tehran easily. She gave her daughter faith. Betty assured Mahtob that she would never leave without her and she didn't. I think that Mahtob is very lucky to have a mother like Betty.Mahtob stayed strong through this experience to she did everything her mom told her to. She became an actress to help her mommy find away to get out of Tehran. I recommend this book because it shows u just how strong and determined women can be so u should never underestimate us like Moody did to Betty. And u see where that got him.
Book Review: EXCELLENT Summary: 5 Stars
This book is interesting from start to finish. I also watched the DVD and found it covered the ssues well. However reading the book was a much more in-depth picture of the story of Betty and Mahtob. It is a mothers' love for her child that enables her to fight her husband to bring the two of them back home. Betty went through some really difficult tasks to get home and it was touching and tearful at times to read what she had to go through while in Iran.
Through the book you learn the feelings and develop a greater understanding of what the character is thinking. The book was imformative and worth the read. The daughter gives her mother courage, strength, hope and most importantly support when needed. She was her mothers' strength and covered her mum well when she needed to make phone calls and see the embaassy. They together escaped and Mahtob is extremely calm even through some difficult conditions and routes they had to take when going back home, without food and drink. She holds on till she reaches home safely without a single complaint. She was very brave.
Book Review: not without my daughter Summary: 5 Stars
This book was one of the best that i have read for a long time. A story of an American woman and her child being 'trapped' in a strange culture and country - after going on a 2 week vacation- to please her husband - an Iranian who had spent many years in the States training to be a Doctor. The reality of his 'personality' came out once he was back in his own contry - where he was treated like 'royalty'. He was the 'rich Doctor from America'. As within all areas of life usually only one side of the story is 'acknowledged' the story is 'thought provoking' and keeps you turning the page for more! The things that happened could only happen in this type of country due to their laws and religion - it does get one thinking - especialy the western world about womens postions within society. It was quite a 'scary experience' but one that keep me thinking and 'dissecting' all the possibilites that she had - especially with her daughter to consider and how her mind had to work with his so that she could get through each day - i take my hat off to her - and thank God that she 'got out' A really brilliant book!
Book Review: Different Interpretations Summary: 5 Stars
There are two different ways a person can respond to this book. I enjoyed reading it and would reccommend it to my female friends. If an Iranian read it or someone who is married to an Iranian, he or she would most likely take offense to the content. I have never been subject to such harse behavior and have only one opinion of the way Moody treated Betty: unjustly. She was an American and married an Iranian. It should be her choice as to whether or not she is an Iranian citizen. It is true that the American culture and Iran culture clash, but a society cannot change a citizenship because of marriage. Iran is living in the 12th century. The people are held back by their government. I had never read a book that made me feel so much. How can another person say that Betty Mahmoody's experiences were wrongly expressed? All people are different and one persons view is just as important as anothers, but maybe not as accurrate. I challenge those of you who put down Ms. Mahmoody to go through what she went through. Would you be strong enough to make it out alive?
