Book Review: Not Without My Daughter
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, let me just say to ANYONE who thinks Betty Mahmoody is a racist, you can't play the "race" card here my friends, she married the guy, so if she was racist then explain them being married in the first place, not to mention the fact she named her very own daughter "Mahtob". I also have read numerous reviews thinking she had in some way fabricated her story and it could be "onesided". Here again you may have to display just an ounce of common sense; that whether or not her treatment was as bad as she says , she was being held AGAINST HER WILL. Even if he had not abused her physically, keeping her HELD HOSTAGE is exactly what he and his family had done to her. Dr. Mahmoody knew what he was doing when they left the states and knew the laws there as well, once she is in Iran she has NO RIGHTS.Whoever thinks she is scamming the situation with lies needs to think straight. Noone would up and leave their entire home, family and friends and decide to stay where women are treated like animals and not forgetting the fact her daughter was enduring the same thing. Yes, she has made alot of money from this and the movie and I say good for her. She "earned" it. Anyone envious of her financial situation, maybe you will get lucky and be trapped in a third world country somewhere against your will for 2 yrs., have to ESCAPE 500 miles on foot in some of the most dangerous lands known and with the all mighty dollar in mind, slip back into the US and make tons of money from your horrible experience. After doing so, some of your own Amercian people calling you a liar when you get back.
Bottomline, this is a great book and a great movie and I have become even more proud to be an american since reading it.

Book Review: Excellent but one-sided.
Summary: 5 Stars

Captivating book, but the hurt that she suffered loosing her husband seeps through the pages of the book.
It shows in her writing style.
The fact that she loved her daughter so much is understanding, but little is ever said about her son's and the fact that she may never see them again is not felt in the book.
She must have known by the length of her relationship with Moody that what is expected of a wife in the Iranian culture is much different than what is expected by an American husband.
She also must have known that the children are considered the responsibility of the husband after they reach a certain age.
Iranians love to talk about their homeland and surely in the conversations she and Moody had in their relatively long relationship, these matters of child raising, and duties of the parents were discussed, even if in a matter of conversation though it wasn't established that he felt that way personally.
To put it bluntly, she sounded shocked about the fact in the book, but I'm not sure why.
I am an American and have had 2 Iraninan husbands's, divorced both times.
It's not a matter of who's wrong or right persay, but what culture were you raised in.
Though I do not condone physical abuse, it's a fact that it happens in every culture all around the world.
You can take the Iranian out of Iran, but you can't take Iran out of the Iranian, and so on and so forth with American's.

Book Review: Absolutely gripping, this story had me in tears -a must read
Summary: 5 Stars

Betty Mahmoody married an Iranian, who had been naturalised to America for more than 20 years. Yet when Khomeini led the Islamic revolution, he began to talk more and more of 'home'. While Betty had fears about going to Iran, she thought she must, as she did not want to file for divorce and risk her husband's wrath, and worse, that he could take her daughter who she might never see again.

Swallowing these fears, she went to Iran with him on a two week holiday. Within days, like some horror movie he changed. Screaming and shouting was soon followed by physical violence towards her and their daughter, Mahtob, a young child of five. When the two weeks were up he announced they would not be returning home. She had no choice but to stay, in Iran a wife is considered property and she could not leave Iran without the express permission of her husband. The story of her 18 months in Iran and eventual escape is unbelievable.

To Betty's credit she never once lost faith or gave in. While she was overwhelmed with despair she still would not allow herself to believe 'this is it'.

The ending is climactic, incredible and all the more gripping because it is true.

You must follow this book up with the sequel, "For the Love of a Child", her story of their return to America and helping others in similar circumstances with abducted children.

I can not recommend this book highly enough

Summary: 5 Stars

Betty Mahmoody's book was truly amazing. Although there is a lot of controversy saying that she has degraded many people in Iran and Tehran I don't think that is true. In the story she recognizes that she shouldn't judge people by nationality, and also she learns that there are good people in Iran. She makes many friends even though she still has many enemies. Her story of escape and the details of her determination are truly inspiring and the stories of her adventures and adversities in another country are still disturbing. It is scary to believe that there are people who would do such things as Moody and other men and sometimes women did to Betty. Also though it is touching how many people tried to help her in her times of need. Mahtob was also very brave, especially being a girl of her age. I'm sorry that she was hurt by Moody, and I'm sorry that he didn't turn out to be the stable father that he originally portrayed himself as. This book was truly amazing and I hope that others come to believe this as well.I would definitely recomend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, excitement, plot twists, and perhaps quite a bit of danger. There are some parts of the book that are not exactly suitable for children under the age of twelve but above that the book is safe for anyone. I enjoyed this book and I think others will too.
