Book Reviews of No Time for GoodbyeBook Review: Best read in one sitting Summary: 5 Stars
This is a story which builds momentum steadily. The prologue is definitely a hook as a teenager awakes after an alcohoic binge and subsequent fight with her family only to find them inexplicably gone. We then encounter her 25 years later, still traumatized by her family's desappearance, but happily married and with a daughter. We meet her husband, her aunt, and several adjacent characters as she is first interviewed on TV, and then a few incidents occur culminating in a couple of murders obviously somehow connected with the initial disappearance of her family, and we also get brief, tantalizing glimpses at those apparantly responsible. This is an author I've only recently discovered, and although I wasn't that taken by the first of his books that I read, this book definitely boosts him in my estimation.
Book Review: Wow, Awesome! You Gotta read this one! Summary: 5 Stars
This was the best book I have read in a LONG time! I will be looking for all this author's other books right away. I read it in one long day, about 12 hrs straight through. I couldn't stand the suspense and skipped ahead to read the last 3 pages and actually that didn't really give away the surprise ending. He did a wonderful job of portraying just how screwed up this teenager became thinking her whole family might have abandoned her, and how awful it would be NOT knowing exactly what did happen to her family. Okay, so some parts weren't perfect--the family's reaction to Tess's death was a little like Oh well, but all in all, I give this book a 98% perfect score!
Book Review: BETTER THAN I'D EXPECTED Summary: 5 Stars
I'm glad that the negative reviews on Amazon UK (which set their own standard for unreadability) did not deter me from reading this thriller, which is well-crafted and absorbing. Without giving anything away there are several strands which provide what it's fashionable to call a social commentary; the television exposé, the faux psychic, the withdrawn but creative schoolkid, and the soft-hearted thug, to name but four. Of course you can pick holes in the plot if you so choose, but the same is true of Raymond Chandler novels, and I find it significant that the people who criticise on that count never specify just what flaws they've found.
Book Review: Loved it Summary: 5 Stars
I was leaving for a trip and had little time to spare before I left so I stopped by Walgreens and looked at the selection they had. I was torn between this and another book but I'm so glad I picked this one! I haven't read many thrillers but this one was definitely one of my favorites. My trip was only three days long, but I finished it in that period of time and probably could have finished it faster had I not had stuff to do. I highly recommend it if you're looking for some definite excitement. Can't wait to read more Linwood Barclay work in the future.
Book Review: A page turner Summary: 5 Stars
Make sure you have some free time to read if you get this. What a great story--a great yarn. I read it this week and have already recommended it to two friends. It has a great premise, a well written plot and extremely likable characters. I could not put it down. I'm thrilled to have found Mr. Barclay. I've already ordered two more of his books and I'm looking forward to reading them this weekend.
