Book Review: Inspiring

Somehow Ann Rule's books always seem to transcend the harrowing depths possible in the true crime genre. I had been saddened by the coverage of Rolf Neslund's disappearance on "City Confidential" a few years back on A&E and remember wanting to know more about his tragic end. Ann's featured work, "The Captain", is a well-researched, well-written work which honors the memory of Rolf Neslund and looks into his death with a compassionate and heart-centred approach. I very much appreciate the inclusion of the last case in this book, about the young woman who survived after being kidnapped by a sexual predator and his accomplice, while she was working on the night shift at a local crisis center. It is helpful that Ms. Rule lets readers know that it can make a difference between life and death if you can learn how to behave towards captors and how to assess captors' behavior in a hostage-type situation. I know the approach this woman used works, as I too found myself in a somewhat similar situation many years ago, with a dangerous sexual predator who, although I did not know it at the time, had somehow escaped from the locked ward for the criminally insane at a state hospital. By staying calm, not struggling, to some extent doing what I was told, but every minute also being aware of my surroundings and looking for a way to safely escape this man with a loaded gun, I was able to survive fairly unscathed. But this is not about me. This is about Ann Rule's excellent new Crime Files book: "No Regrets." Inspiring, as usual, and highly recommended.
