Book Review: Pitiful characters, pointless stories

I decided to take a chance on this book since it was rated one of the best of 2007. Boy, was I disappointed. I found the short stories to be pointless, often difficult to understand what was actually going on versus what was merely happening in a character's imagination, and unnecessarily lascivious. I found very few of the main characters to be in any way admirable or even compelling--most were pitiful at best.
