Book Reviews of No, David!

Book Review: Finally, a book my son talks about!
Summary: 5 Stars

Mr. KnickKnack (entertainer in Wash DC area)read this book aloud to room full of toddlers/moms and my son, age 9 who has autism. What a hit! big laughs, lots of audience participation. Here's the letter I sent Mr. Knick Knack in thanks, but I also owe thanks to author David Shannon.
Dear Mr. KnickKnack,
I've heard of you before, but last thurs was the first time i've taken my son to see you (at Tyson's Pimmit library). He's 9 and has autism so you probably remember him as the big boy, Luke , towering over the toddlers w/ me hovering close by so he wouldn't grab your guitar.

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful show and your entertaining and animated reading of the book about David. Luke has done ALL those things the David character did and still does some --which we're trying to correct. I was so excited that he actually paid attention to the story. I STRUGGLE to get him interested in books. He can read, but sadly does not love books and the prognosis for overcoming autism is always better when the kids are interested in books. But I wanted to share with you that, after your show, he started talking about the book you read! "Did David supposed to run down the street naked?!" then he answered himself "NOOOOOO!"

(We've been trying to teach him that it's not appropriate to go outside naked to get his bathing suit where it is drying...or change into his bathing suit in the living room in front of his sister's friends. It was the first time I heard him actually process and USE the word "naked"!).
Also as he was about to take his bath tonight, he said,. "TOO MUCH!! DAVID DID TOO MUCH WATER! WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?! NOOOOOOO!" Which is what reminded me to email you to thank you!

I'm a little self concious bringing him to shows for toddlers since he's now so big, and it's hard for me to see that his attention span is even shorter than that of most 1-2 year olds...but you were so entertaining and animated, you kept his attention...I'm so happy I made the effort.

Thanks again, I hope to see you at more shows soon.

Sincerely,
Susan Goewey Carey
PS As my son instructed me on the drive to Hockey Camp, I went to the library today and checked out the No, David book...I'm sure we'll be buying it soon :)

Summary of No, David!

David's mom always said no! No,no,no. No,David! is Shannon's delightfully illustrated book of all the naughty things he used to get told off for as a child. Follow David as he jumps on his bed, walks mud through the house and breaks plant pots.
Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can be nothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating. "No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. (Ages 3 to 6) --Richard Farr
