Book Reviews of No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green

Book Review: Yes, This Is What A True Christian Looks Like!
Summary: 5 Stars

I probably would have fallen away if not for hearing the Life Story of Keith Green on the radio back in 1989. I was so impressed with Keith's passion for wanting to be more than just a nominal Christian -- but to be a TRUE Christian that constantly sought what the Lord would have him do.

Up until the day I heard No Compromise being read on the radio, I was almost convinced that churches and Christians were phony. I had been raised in the church, saved and baptized, but as a teenager, I saw a lot of bad things in the church. I had started to give up on Christianity and quit going to church.

Within a week, I bought No Compromise for myself and read it two or three times within two weeks, and I have since read it several more times. I even read it into a tape recorder and sent tapes to one of my friends. I have also sent a couple copies of this book to other friends.

From this book, I found out that if Keith could be a true Christian then I could be one too (no matter what the obstacle or what other Christians may say or do to try and cool me down). I still use Keith's music and words as motivation in my walk with the Lord.

A couple of my favorite parts in this book are: 1) When Keith sets aside his music for the Lord and decides not to write or perform any more music until the Lord tells him; and 2) When, after Keith had been a Christian for a couple years, he gathers a group of people to tell them, "I just got saved!" (Read it to find out why or how).

I believe this book, Keith's life story, will inspire any Christian trying to walk in holiness and intimacy with the Lord.

Book Review: Great book, minor flaws
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a review of No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green, by Melody Green and David Hazard, ISBN 0736903194.

I was recently introduced to Keith's music by some friends. I loved it so much that I ended up buying both two-CD sets and the songbooks to go with them. The man was a musical genius, regardless of one's opinion of his message. Both of those two-CD sets (Keith Green: The Ministry Years, Volumes 1 and 2, by Sparrow Records) include the text of this book.

This biography is excellent, though as a previous reviewer mentioned, it does have some gaps. For a book about a man who spent most of his life in the music biz, very little is said about recording sessions, music gear, logistics of organizing concerts all over the country, etc. And the most glaring omission, that occurred to me after I read the book: his band. Nothing was said about his band. I read somewhere else that Keith had some of the era's finest jazz players on his band, but the book says nothing about any of that.

All such quibbles aside, however, this is a great book. It takes the reader from Keith's rising stardom as a child, through his eclipse by Donny Osmond, through his years of searching, to his eventual salvation, and of course through his all-too-short years of ministry. As someone very familiar with most of his songs, I enjoyed reading the stories of how they came to be, and also learning a bit more about the depth of Keith's walk with God.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to know more about Keith Green.

Book Review: A must read for every Keith Green fan!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was by far the greatest autobiography iv'e ever read. For anybody who is familiar with the music of the late Keith Green, this is a must have for your library. The book is basically a story of a young mans journey through a corrupt and immoral world. The book starts off with Keith before he devoted his love to Jesus Christ, and shows the confusion, and despair which can come from a life with not much meaning. From drugs, to sadness, To lonely nights on the streets of Hollywood, to his total and utter love for Jesus. Some people who may not be familiar with the music of Keith Green may not be as affected by this book as a Keith Green fan might be. So I would suggest for anyone thinking of reading this book, first buy a Keith cd or two, listen to it a few times, and then read the book to get the full impact. I was first exposed to keith's music in the late 80's, and I just read the book earlier this year, so obviously it affected me deeply. This is actually the only book ever to bring me to tears. At the end where Melody gets on the phone to tell a friend the news, I lost it. One thing to keep in mind before reading this book is that it may change your life deeply. So be prepared for that. This book is so good, it deserves 10 stars, not five. This is a must read for everyone!

Book Review: No Compromise
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read it and read it. It is the most well-written biography I've ever read, and so simple. It is this very book that has directly affected me to not compromise. Why compromise? "No compromise" is like saying, "No deviation from the path! Stay in the Way and let all others mock if need be." Since that's where Jesus is, why wouldn't His own be there also?

Many years ago I was at a "Jesus Fest" in Texas sitting on the grass with my sister listening to one of the bands playing. Suddenly, my sister--several years older than me--said, "I think that's Melody Green sitting in front of us." It was Melody. She was just casually sitting there like anyone else in the crowd. She seemed like a nice person just sitting there talking with my sister for a minute or so, but I didn't know who she was and didn't think much of it. It wasn't until many years later that I somehow came across this book and thought, "Oh, how I would have treated that moment so differently had I read this book!"

The story and message of Keith and Melody Green burns in my heart. I definitely recommend this book, and the DVD "Your Love Broke Through" which Melody produced in 2002.

Book Review: What a child is meant to be
Summary: 5 Stars

I had never even heard of Keith Green when I first bought this book back in 1992, just thought the face on the cover was interesting and the book pretty cheap.

At first I read the book at a slow speed and almost put it away when I got to around page 100. But reading a bit further the book started getting interesting, and when I got to where Keith became a Christian the book really caught me and I started having troubles putting it away. I think I've bought 7 or 8 copies by now (given most of them away, but read the book about 5 times), and even tried translating parts of it into Norwegian.

Keith just wanted to live for Christ, and this book has challenged me a lot and led to a few changes in my life. His music is fair enough (the book made me buy a few tapes as well), but music was only Keiths tool. He wanted to touch lives, and this book reveals his heart. If you read it, be prepared to be changed - only the Bible has ever made a similar impact on me.
