Book Reviews of Nikon D200 Digital Field Guide

Book Review: Great Book on Great Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

Nikon D200 owners, this is a gotta have it book. Outlines what you need to know

Book Review: Mostly excellent
Summary: 4 Stars

I did notice a couple errors in several of the figures, but I've read the book carefully, and I'd hardly say that a few mislabeled illustrations, and a couple typos qualify as "riddled." I prefer to have my informational glass 99 percent full, rather than claim it's partly empty, when the rest of the guide is so very good. I'm glad to see that the author accepts valid criticism with such good humor.

This book is extremely well organized. I like the way you're given just the information you need, when you need it, so you don't get overwhelmed with too much data when you're still learning to use a very complex camera. For example, in the brief Quick Tour, the author sums up everything you really must understand to get out and begin shooting with your D200.

Then, in the first chapter, he immerses you in a more complete examination of the camera and its controls, from every angle, top, front, back, and sides. I found the views of the D200 with the careful labeling of individual controls (except for the autofocus settings mixup) to be much more helpful than the coarse black and white drawings in the manual. As you progress through the book, you'll learn about metering, setting up your camera, and choosing from available lenses. (Only Nikon lenses are covered in any depth, but the guidelines apply to any other vendor's products, too.)

The last chapter provides discussions of shooting photos in various situations, with example photos and tips. There's enough detail to get you started, but the author obviously knows that the buyers of this camera won't need extensive hand-holding. The techniques are handy to have, and may even serve as a good reminder for more experienced D200 photographers.

All in all, I think this is a mostly excellent effort, with a surprising amount of information in a fairly brief book. There's a good attention to accuracy that easily makes up for minor lapses here and there. This is definitely a bargain.

Book Review: Quality Book with Good Information
Summary: 4 Stars

With any new camera, it becomes difficult to try and understand all of the features and functions. The manual that comes with the camera just does not seem sufficient to give all of the details. The Nikon D200 Field Guild is a great companion to the owners manual as it provides details and real world examples of how features should be set or at a minimum what they do. After a few frustrating picture taking experiences, I decided to purchase this book. Since reading it, I feel my understanding of how the camera should be set has been dramatically enhanced as has my confidence. If you are new to the Nikon D200 or if you are just not sure what all the capabilities are for this camera I would suggest picking up a copy of the Field Guide. I think you will appreciate the ease of reading and the depth of content it provides. Ultimately it will increase your confidence in using the camera which should result in better pictures.

Book Review: NIkon D200 Field Guide
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great book, particularly if you are not already a guru of digital SLRs. I am a pretty experienced amateur with film SLRs and really appreciated the thoroughness with which Mr. Busch covers the basics of digital. I have had the Magic Lantern Guides in the past and am waiting for my copy of the D200 guide to arrive from them. I would consider this book to be a bit less of what I consider a "field guide" than my previous M.L. guides, but I am glad I bought it! It covers more than I would expect from the feild guides I have owned. The content is very pertinent for anyone who purchased the D200 with limited experience with digital SLRs. There are many sections that will make this great for the advanced point-&-shooters who have taken the plunge in to SLR shooting, too. I will replace this book if I lose it!

Book Review: Nikon D200 Field Guide
Summary: 4 Stars

This volume has been a great resource for me to make more effective use of the Nikon D200 digital camera. The complexity of this camera for me as a long time film camera user was somewhat challenging, and the factory documentation while complete was not always clear or helpful. This volume has greatly improved my learning curve, and enabled me to learn to use the more sophisticated features of the D200 quickly and efficiently. This volume will not be for everyone, and is written "below" the level of the experienced digital camera user. I would unhesitatingly recommend this as a first volume for any user of the D200, unless they experienced digital camera users.
